Why does everyone hate Rupp so much?

It dates back to when he went pro, then decided that was not the right decision at the time and payed back the money for being pro and then being allowed to compete in college. It was totally wrong what he and his handlers(Nike/Salazar) did. They claimed he wasn't professional but if he weren't then why pay back money? Bitter taste is always remembered.

Haha, yea that definitely justifies hating one of our top distance guys.

I'm guessing you have only limited outside knoweledge and bias to go on here. For one thing, you forgot the mention that as an Oregonian, who's coach was a great legend at Oregon he only didn't start there because there was a guy running the show who had basically shut down the distance program, and since has carried the tradition to Oklahoma. When that mans rep and behind the scenes nonsense leaked out and he was forced out Galen had a reason to run for the school of his dreams in his own back yard.

A lot of jealousy was engineered at this time because there was a public figure gathering a lot of attention and basically getting what he wants while not doing anything illegal. People will always scrap and claw at others who are achieving more than others like crabs on a box with an open lid. None can get out because any that try get pulled back in by the more cowardly crabs. In Galens case, he got out of the box filled with cowardly crabs and now the crabs hide under their mothers in the box so they can not be seen and whisper anonymous remarks at the one who got out, all the while the one who got out gets further and further away and the rest stay in the box developing more jealousy of the one who got out.

The truth is that many throw hate at him because he looks like a total dweeb and has no charisma. This obviously should not matter, but this is the type of company kept on these boards.

I don't hate him. Why would I? He is very talented, works very hard, and has always been cordial when I've seen him and Im just a mediocre runner.

People hate Rupp because he is what most non-runners think of when they think of a runner, and their perception is typically justified. People hate Galen Rupp because they hate themselves, but their egos don't permit them to look inwards. It's Freud 101, basic projection.

Very well stated. Yes, LR has it's share of small minded, jealous ones who cannot stand that an average looking distance runner can have so much success, while they are stuck in momma's basement room. Fact is Rupp is an over achiever only because he is talented young man who worked his ass off for what he has accomplished.

Uhm, no, that is not what happened.

He turned pro.

A coaching change happened at Oregon.

He decided he wanted to run for the Ducks.

He APPLIED to the NCAA to be reinstated.

The NCAA said "if you pay back the money you taken from your sponsor so far you can have college eligibility."

Rupp's parents took out a 2nd mortgage on their house and helped Galen pay back the money.

The bitterness?

For Steve Wojciechowski: crappy, uh, but I had no talent, always played hard and did a short epitome of a player. He's also my favorite Duke team was my favorite player, so awful that he's coaching the coaches are just losers Republic (cheap!) Did not have a back injury, the 1994-95 team forged.

He also, woofing and talking smack in the face of his opponent danyeoga will be displayed. What "WoJo" are particularly good, well, tapping the floor with both hands, except during the defense did not play.

I decided to look if he's tough, I guess.

Same reason people hate Rupp.

I'll stick with the simple and obvious: jealousy. Not to mention, when someone like Rupp is successful but not a graceful personality, people find it easy to justify picking on him to feel better about themselves.

Sad, really. One day, just maybe, letsrunners will get outside and put in the miles instead of playing critic at their keyboards.

I have nothing against GR, but it seems to me that people perceive him as a snotty upper class kid, who is running very fast. His success as a runner adds to the annoyance.

Am I off shell here?

I wonder if it's the same kind of thing as the attitude people seem to take towards people in general who are given opportunities and make the most out of them. Someone who grew up in a rich home, for example, with Ivy educated parents might get looked down on for making a lot of money, even if that person was putting in long hours of studying and hard work to get where they are. To the minds of many, it doesn't matter how hard you work, you will always be judged on what help you were given along the way.

You're right, but your second sentence is slightly confusing. Allow me to clarify: he's a perfectly nice guy, not a jerk, but he's a specific subset of "nice guy": a sweet, pretty-boyish, non-masculine guy. Nothing wrong with that; it's just not the beau ideal of our time. And, as that, he reminds many of boys here of themselves: their skinny, gawky, non-masculine selves. So they project their hatred of themselves onto Rupp and make him a scapegoat for their own fears and insecurities. The "Rupp = g*y" insult is part of that. Posters here seem to feel that if they keep insisting Rupp is g*y, it will reasssure them that they are NOT g*y.

Older men secure in their masculinity and sexuality, like me, don't feel the same need to denigrate Rupp, his presumed sexual orientation, etc. We're able to cheer him on without feeling the hollow sense that, in making a non-masculine pretty boy an object of admiration, we're in danger of being sucked into some imagined g*y swamp.

I am not so sure about all the wannabe Freuds that follow but the bearer of truth has indeed born the truth here.

This really doesn't make sense. There are many other runners with equal or better accomplishments (and training advantages, and nice family...and whatever else one might be jealous of). But nobody else receives as much visceral hatred on these boards as Rupp.
