Approaching the last year of my 30's. 2005 I hit the big 40!
I like to use "Old Timer" since my/our hey day was in the 80's. In those days, there were no heart rate monitors, THG, or EPO. Steve Scott, Cram and Ovett. We all thought Tom Byers was cool because he could break 4 and have long hair. Texas A&M was a distance powerhouse, Rodney DeHaven won a NCAA D2 meet, and title IX hadn't screwed over all the track/cross country programs. Arnold was the Terminator, not the Governor, and Eddie Murphy used to say the "F" word, not be Dr. Doolittle. Of course, we also had Wham! and Kajagoogoo.... yeeesh!
I'm still trudging along, running about 25 miles a week. Last year I ran a 4:43 mile, which was my PR when I was 15, so running just as fast 25 years later is something to feel good about.
Nursing a calf strain right now, but getting ready for a October marathon with an old team mate (a tune-up sub-3:00), and hoping to run sub-2:35 next year at Austin.
You're also reading the boards... are you still running?
