This has happened to me on numerous occasions, and I have seen it happen to others. At least for me (I can't really speak for why it happens to other people) I think the reason is mainly mental. It's like I have to learn how to run a race, or even if I haven't run a distance in a while I'll have to relearn. I go out to run the distance for the first time ever, or even just the first time that season, and in the middle of the race I'll be hurting really bad and I'll think that if I go any faster I'll certainly blow up and run a crap race. Then, at the end of the race I'll have a suspiciously large amount of energy left and know that I didn't give it everything that I had. This typically happens for one or two races, maybe more. Then, I go a little bit harder, until finally I get to the point where I have the knowledge/experience and confidence that I can go totally balls out and I run a big PR!
I definitely need to run several races at a given distance before I can go anything even close to my actual physical potential. To give an example, in my freshman year of high school, I ran like two two-mile races indoors. I ran like 10:4x and I think that I didn't even duck under eleven in the others. Then in outdoor I ran a couple of 10:2x. In my state you had to run under 10:20 to qualify for the regional championships. I honestly thought that I would never qualify. Then I had a good race at a dual meet and ran 10:08, and a week later I ran 9:58.[/quote]
