What is the deal with the NIKE "Elite" High School Camp currently going on in Oregon? In case you have NOT heard Nike has the TOP 10 (?) HS boys and girls out there for a XC Camp this week. All expenses paid by NIKE. Campers are also visiting EUGENE. What a surprise. Last time I checked, Eugene is 90 miles from Portland. Of course UO are NOT involved. However,how can this be legal or sanctioned by state federations? Am I missing something?
Somebody better call the WHAAAAmbulance for you. You must just be jealous because your athlete didn't get invited.
Eugene is running town USA why would it not be there. Should it have to be at a neutral site at least 150 miles from any other campus???
Wow complain about nike doing a good thing for good distance runners. They could bond with other great runners and help move US distance running forward in the future. Get out of your small time this college vs that college mentality and think will this help US distance running as a whole. If the Answer is yes then it is a good program.
10 people isnt very many, you cant tell which ones are going to be good after high school, stuff happens...could they take like 50?
the only thing wrong with that situation is the caption of the picture. I hate it when people refer to California as "Cali." In an effort to sound cool, they end up sounding ridiculous.

the problem is that this is a booster paying athletes way to a college facility. if they just went out to portland that's one thing, but now we're talking about an essentially free recruiting trip for UO. shady stuff in my book
pretty sure something similar happened in the mid-90s at UofO. i remember riley, jennings, and isaac hawkins being at camp together. then, though, i think it was run congruently with the regular UofO camp.

i am not saying that basketball is clean, as a whole. it would also be fairly naive to assume that track is clean, as a whole. but there are elite camps where nothing fishy goes on.
i was mainly responding the OP who seemed to think such an event was otherwordly. its not. and, for the sport, its probably a good thing. the more running becomes cool and hyped, the more people will do it and the more talent will be exposed.
There is no way a company like Nike would put on this event without making sure they weren't breaking any rules/regulations with the powers-that-be. If Nike put these kids in a position that their college eligibility was at stake they would have a PR nightmare and some serious lawsuits on their hands.
It's pretty easy for them to pre-clear things through the NCAA.

all legal... 20 very fortunate and gifted kids getting the week of a lifetime.... maybe some other shoe companies will get the hint and do likewise and more kids could benefit...
These kids should be at home playing x-box and shooting baskets, not getting inspired on running.
Unfortunately for them though, Wheating is in Vermont and not in Eugene. I imagine he's one of their biggest inspirations right now.
If only Ben & Jerry would sponsor an elite XC camp in Vermont:)

I see another sponsor for Wheating on the horizon! What is Wheatings favorite flavor/concoction? Perhaps a frozen yogurt brand to appeal to the healthier side?

The rosa Twins are there as well.
the "campers" hung out with oregon project runners, too.
