Ahh, but Kuts v Pirie 10000m! What a race that was.
1992 Johnny Gray in the 800 (William Tanui)
1964 5000 (Bob Schul) as well as 10000 (Billy Mills)
1972 Pre, obviously
1972 800 (Dave Whottle) Two Kenyans and Arzhanov led every step except for the LAST ONE
1984 800 (Joaquim Cruz) only led in the last 50 or so
Multiple WC/Oly 10000s Tergat outkicked by Geb EVERY time
Starting to get the point?
In championship races with competitive fields, front running is not a strategy for success.
Aesop Trail Run
tortoise vs hare
There are some exceptions. Both Frank Shorter and Joan Benoit won Olympic golds with a front running strategy. However one other crash I can think of are Steve Jones at the 1986 Commonwealth Marathon who had a huge lead and then crashed as well. So you are right most of the time it does not work, but there are exceptions. And as long as their exception folks will try it.
1983 New York City. After the initial shakeout, Geoff Smith led to 26 miles and lost the .2

The hare should have sat and kicked.

I'm not sure how many of those count. The question isn't who got outkicked late in the race, but who led almost the entire race then lost it very close to the finish.
1964 10000: I'm not sure Clarke led most of the race. I think there was a lot of lead changing among the top four runners. Even if he did lead most of it, Gammoudi passed him with about 300 meters left, then Mills swept by in the last 20 or so meters.
1972 5000: Pre led very little of that race. Maybe from 4 laps to go to 1 lap to go, then a brief spell on the last lap.
Terget outkicked by Geb: In 1996, Tergat led for about 4 laps of the 10000.
1972 800: Arzhanov took the lead with about 250 meters left.

This may be the most famous: The "Miracle Mile" between Bannister and Landy.
Julie Moss in the 1982 Hawaii Ironman:

Paula Newby-Frasier at the 1995 Hawaii Ironman:
She didn't lead the entire race, but at the 2007 Chicago Marathon, Adriana Pirtea assumed she had wrapped up the victory. The defending champ Berhane Adere sprinted all out in the last mile and flew past Pirtea who never realized what was happening as she was waving to the crowd assuming she was about to win.

Jim Peters Vancouver Empire Games marathon 1954, he was leading the race by ~15mins and collapsed from heatstroke in the finishing straight!
