Not for an American 800 olympian going against the best 1500/milers in the world. There is no argument you can make for Wheating on an international 1500 level that would ever warrant him being added to this field. In a year or two when he has been pro and busts some fast times as I am sure he will, yeah he'll be in this field. This year, no way, he doesn't deserve it YET.

If Wheating dropped a 3:35/3:34 (3:53/3:52)which would be huge for him, he would still be almost 5 seconds back at the end of the field. How can you say such a guy deserves to be in this field. That's just crazy and stupid too. And American Olympians are not the same class as a a B-string Kenyan in the 1500 with the exception of Webb in a good year.

Also, to the earlier poster who mentioned Webb, and letting him in as a high school kid, there is a big difference between a high school star going under 4 minutes in the US than a senior in college. Also, Wheating still couldn't even now run 3:53, so comparing Wheating to someone who was faster in high school than he is as a senior in college isn't helping your case.

These guys are gonna go through half way in ~ 1:52. Most NCAA guys would blow up after that point...with the exception of German Fernandez. I don't think Wheating has a prayer if he is running this.

nah he wasn't really right at all. Wheating was 2 seconds back just off the lead pack instead of 5 seconds off the back in dead last.

Does this qualify as the collegiate record or was wheating eligibility up at NCAAs?

That's not real world. Real world is exactly what happened. Wheating maintained contact and finished in the upper half of a very world class field, and was kicking as fast as any of them home.

And you know what, he looked conservative in the race.

For most of the race 8th-9th place and then ran by some pretty good guys last 300M in.

He managed his own abilities very well, but he was never in this race, not by a long shot.Nor did anyone think he would be.

What it does indicate is that with some further strength work, this is clearly a 3:31-32 type talent and potential sub 3:50 miler.

1. His 3:51.75 is huge for him. So I was right.2. He was 1.99 seconds back instead of ALMOST 5 seconds. I call this a draw.3. Places 1-4 were under 3:50.70. The spread wasn't as large as expected, true, but there was a second of space between he and 4th and he and 6th place and out of a field of 14, so true, he wasn't at the back but he wasn't in the game either. Bottom line, be had a breakthrough away from the 2nd pack spread between 3:52.84-3:57.06. Had he been at the front of that pack it would have been huge. If he was in the middle to back of that pack then he would have been where I expected him. I think the the caliber of the front to pull him, his 800 finishing speed and home town crowd helped him. Lucky set of circumstances that helped move him to another level, eh?4. Kenya's 10th guy on the IAAF charts this year at 1500 is at 3:35.60 to our third American on the same list (only two of our three 2008 US Olympians appear on list before Kenya's 10th guy) at 3:35.77. Clearly if US men are going to compete in field's like the Bowerman mile then they have to do exactly that, compete, and be in that lead pack otherwise we are running on par with the Kenyan B-team so I was right.Overall, Wheating did much better than I expected. There was nothing to indicate he was a 3:51.74 guy but I'm happy for him. Hopefully he'll become a 3:50 guy and learn to run with Kiprop at the front.

1. It was only huge because you have no indication of his training. You think they are going to enter him in this race if they honestly believe he cannot compete AND run fast?

2. This is not a draw. You were clearly wrong.

3. Of course Wheating isn't going to be "mixing" it up for the win at this point. Asbel is on a whole different level. Maybe there are many Kenyans faster than Wheating and US Milers, but that does not change the fact that he ran well and beat some guys down the stretch.

4. You DO NOT need to run a fast time to be capable of mixing it up. This 3:51 combined with the fact that Wheating has predominantly focused on the 800m should prove to many that as he moves up he will be threatening for a Medal at the WC. His style of racing is the way you can win a championship race, you sit and kick. That's how it's done.

Great for Wheating. Flip side is Jim Ryun ran 3:51.1 on dirt 43 years ago and said he felt like he was jogging, ready to run another mile. We need someone with that type of talent to show up. So Kiprop can wave to the crowd and then feel foolish when he's run down.

Marks do not count as collegiate records if they are run after USATF.

Collegiates have run sub 3:50 in the summer before so this would not be a record if those marks were counted.

Why did the main page say Manzano did awful? He ran a 4:06 mile, which converts to a 3:47 1500m. That's faster than his 3:51 at USA's! He should be happy, he had such a good performance at USA's and he improved!

The original question is whether he deserved to be in that race based on whether he might be competitive or fast enough. He was not fast enough prior to the race, and his competitiveness was only proven on the US scene and not yet against an Olympic final crowd.2. So, he was 2 seconds back instead of almost 5. I lose. I'm okay with that.3. Wheating mixed it up which is a fine result based on being given a chance to run against folks of this caliber. That's great and bodes well for him competing in the future. He's at the threshold of actually being a decent international miler. Sub 3:50 will put him there for sure. As of now, he's nascent.4. It helps to actually run fast. We all know global championships are tactical affairs and 800 speed is a huge asset. But guys like Kiprop and Keitany et al aren't always going to follow that pattern so it does help to be in the mix up front and not in the 2nd pack.
