East proves once again that he is good in a slow race.
These guys were on 4:32 mile pace at 800m! And people whine about slow American races!
What's up with this?? they didn't close fast at all? 58 from 8-12 and then a 39? what the deuce?
great running. i thought they were running 1500 though. what gives? last minute change.. :)
East was disqualified. Bit unlucky but can't argue really. Still an excellent run. And James Thie now world championship 5th place - nice one James.
These two used to race each other at English Schools and u17/u20 AAAs so good to see them coming through to world class.
was this a 1500m race or the mile?? its kind of slow for a 15
Anyone know why East was DQ'd? It was a bit of a scramble at the end and he was in lane 4 when he crossed the line, but I spotted nothing untoward.

East stripped of third spot
Michael East saw his medal celebrations cut short when he was disqualified after finishing third in the 1500m at the World Indoor Championships.
East fought all the way and briefly led the field just before the bell.
He was overtaken by eventual winner Paul Korir of Kenya and Ivan Heshko of Ukraine, who took silver, in the closing stages.
But he went wide to hold off Laban Rotich and the Kenyan was awarded bronze after his appeal was upheld.
It would have been Great Britain's third medal of the championships.
"I couldn't have given it any more. I had nothing left in my legs," East said before learning of his disqualification.
"The Kenyan was holding his line but then I took him wide. I really wanted a medal and I'm delighted with the outcome."
East's disqualification meant fellow Briton James Thie was promoted to fifth after clocking three minutes 53.36 seconds.
East should have never been disqualified. It is an outrage. All he was doing was racing. Rotich would have done the same to him.
if you can get the position without contact and force someone wide then good for you. what a pussy move by rotich, he got beat so he cried.
Where are all the guys bitching about a slow race now?? Most of them would have ripped everybody in the race a new asshole if this was the US Champs.
And too bad for Thie. What he did was no less blatant than what Myers was doing to Gruber the last 20 yards of their 15.. Indoor is a contact sport.

This is BS. They disqualify a guy for moving out... an acceptable tactic, but they don't disqualify Mutola for shoving Ceplak in the last homestraight. Mutola had plenty of room to go around Ceplak, she just chose to run right through her... Double standard here.

Vipam, who cast the stones not long ago about 'slow' US Trials races, is unable to account for the 'slow' women's 3000m and hasn't offered an opinion on the M1500m. Know why he can't account for the 'slow' times? Because there is no accounting for them. A gun is fired and the athletes are left to their own out there. They aren't obligated to run as Vipam or anybody feels they should 'to improve their chances'. Every race an adventure.
East did wrong, once you are on the finish stretch you have to choose your lane, East went through 3 lanes....bastard.

Maybe so but the rules don't reflect that!
See NCAA rule 5-5 for example.
The funny thing is how he admitted what he did in the interview quoted above, apparently before the DQ was handed down: "The Kenyan was holding his line but then I took him wide."
Yikes. Either remain silent or say the usual, "Well, it was hectic, everybody was going for it, blah, blah, blah."

Clearly you should check the rules. Running someone into outside lanes is illegal and unethical. It is definitely not an "acceptable tactic"!
point taken, it may be against the rules, but "moving out" is pretty common down the home stretch to force the runner behind to run further. However, the double standard still applies. I'm pretty sure a runner is not allowed to run through another and push her out of the way in order to win... which is what Mutola reportedly did.
