I was just checking out the list of who has qualified and declared themselves for the 10K. Please correct me if I'm wrong but no one on the list appears to be in the same league as Rupp. That raise the question for me of how he is going to run. Will he let others lead and outkick everyone at the end like he did last year? Will he try pushing the pace himself?
Noodle along at 28:45 pace and outsprint whoever's still with him with 40 to go. Easy peasy!

Exactly why I raised the question. I tend to agree with the other posters that he will sit and kick because that is his winning strategy against other Americans. But why? One thing we do know about Salazar is that he doesn't enter Rupp in a race without purpose. I feel like Rupp is going to do something to challenge himself in this race. I'm just not sure what. Its too far along in the year to characterize it as a "tune up" race. I think the poster mentioning a fast last mile could be right on the money.

It will be about 80F (no that's not a misprint) on the track for the mens 10000. He CANNOT run a fast time under those condtions. Maybe they're afraid to face Chris Solinsky again (who will be doing the 5000 at pre and apparently going for the AR that Lagat just beat him to).
It might make sense if Salazar is setting up a 5000m AR attempt at Stockholm. But Rupp will be cooked for at least a couple of weeks. Maybe they just plan it as a sit-and-kick glorified tempo run since there's nobody entered that can challenge him.

He'll be preparing by wearing a trash bag outfit with 5 track suits over it, while running indoors on the treadmill with the heat cranked to 90 (no fan). Breath right strip over nose, one of those silly phiten necklaces, magnet bracelet, white compression socks. He'll be wearing an ice vest in the hour leading up to the race. He'll cut holes in his singlet, and some sort of ice neckcloth. What time is the race? Maybe throw a white cap in there with sunglasses. Oh yeah, glycerol concoction.
This was kind of my thought, maybe the goal is to get back out into competition and to try and hit a sub 4 last 1600.

There are no pace setters so trying to run a particularly fast time would be stupid. It will be hot so trying to solo away from the pack could get him in trouble. Therefore he'll probably sit in near the front of the pack and go with a couple of laps to go winning a tactical race in 28 low. Lagat will do the same in the 5000, go on the last lap, and win in 13:30ish. Predictable, not particularly entertaining to those of us watching, but their most effective means to win the race, which is the objective after all. Within minutes the first of many Rupp bashing posts will appear on LetsRun.
He will have a grand old time.

Its like when Hall runs a bad day it may just be a training run yet you want to see our stars out running but every f'ing race has to be a goal race. How many of you only run tune up races and goal races. It has to suck to be an elite you can't go to a fourth of July race in the middle of your training because ass-holes on here and in the media will be talking too much shit...

I don't get why Rupp doesn't enter more 5Ks. First of all, there are a lot of 5K races. Secondly, 5K races tend to be loaded with talent. Third, Even if you are focused at competing in the 10K, 5K races are great preparation for the big 10K races. In any given 10K race at the elite level their is inevitably a surge where the pace is going at a 13 flat 5K pace. What better way to prepare for that than run some 5ks.
Of course Rupp is entered in some middle distances. And there is still plenty of time in the season to enter some 5K races. We'll see. Just seems ironic that Ritz of all people came from marathons to enter a 5K last year and now Ryan Hall has apparently announced entering a 5K. But no word from Rupp.
