Of course there was no mention or way of knowing how I placed when I crossed the finish line, who sticks around for 3 hours to find out?

BTW, I would never do this race again. Maybe make a post to a blog or something to tell your story. Try to get people to not show up to the event in the future.
Thanks for the responses and the reassurance that I wasn't alone in my thinking that the Buffalo race director is a cheap bastard.
BTW, the race was very lame. From the very small packet p/u expo that was only open for eight hours, the train that stopped the race for 7 minutes, the lack of road closures/traffic control, the tour of the blighted shuttered factory area of Buffalo, the hide/seek of mile markers, only one timing mat on the course and no clocks and the finish line food of warm half banannas and oranges.
One more thing, the website said that you could register online for $80 until Saturday, but they closed online registration on Tuesday.

Well, he is from Buffalo, so $10 probably represents 3 months income for him. You should help him out. I bet that $10 means a lot more to him than it does to you.
It's Buffalo, NY. What did you expect? The city is an economic wasteland. And the marathon has less than 1000 finishers. If you are going to go for the easy prize money at little marathons, don't be shocked when the race is organized like . . . . a little marathon.

I agree it's cheap of him, but you are costing him time. If they were going to charge to mail awards, maybe that should have been said up front in the fine print and then I'd back him up. As it is in your words, yeah, they sound pretty cheap.

I'm from Buffalo; i think it'd be cool to run thru those areas. 'course, if you're running for finishing place, i understand about the crappy course. Amazing that you got delayed by a train. Geez.
The original poster could not have been stopped by the train and won prize money, since the train stopped a group of people running approx. 9:30 - 10:00 pace at approx. the 11 mile mark, unless the OP ran an incredible negative split that is!

You ever heard the expression "must be present to win"???
I've had to stick around Thai road races most of the morning to get 50 bucks of prize money and even just a trophy. It's the right thing to do. Yes, you do have responsibility after the race, if you win the race.
The Race Director is in the right here....you showed him and his race no respect, so he's just making life difficult for you due to your actions.
However, congratulations on the marathon win!
