2&2 q semi 800's -who will not make it?

There is a slim chance of this. It's possible that every heat will go 1:46 low or even into 1:45. Any heat that goes slower is really rolling the dice since most of these guys don't have kicks like Wheating or Andrews so a fast start gives them a better shot should they finish 3rd or 4th but still have a shot to move thru on time.

Andrews was stretched out pretty well for his 1:46.7 and they didn't go out very hard. If they were to go out in :52.0 range he either may be too far back to get up into 1st or 2nd or have too much lactic to kick in like usual.

I think Wheating is golden either way but Andrews should be hoping for a slower race that he can use his kick off of. Since he's in heat 1 there is a better chance for it. That said I think Travis Thompson is in that heat and the combination of him liking to go out fairly fast and the Oregon crowd could make it fast.

If it's a 1:46 race than you may be right. No guarantee it is. Pac-10's had a handful of 1:45, 1:46 and 1:47 guys in the race and Greer kicked in for 2nd. That said, he is by no means a favorite to qualify on and I highly doubt the ducks are counting on him for points at the meet.

Why are the two Virginia guys, the two from CT and the two from Penn State in the same heats? And why are the three slowest qualifiers all in heat 2?

They are really pretty even. Heat 2 has more guys who have run 1:46 THIS SEASON, but Heat one and three have Andrews and Wheatin respectively so those are 99% 1 less spot to qualify for going in. Heat 1 only has one less 1:46 guy than heat 2 and heat 3 supposedly has 5 guys who have run 1:46 and a guy who has run 1:45.0.

If I were any of the top half of the fields I'd be far more nervous for today than the day of the final (for those who make it).

It all works out:

Average time in heat 1 = 1:47.21

Average time in heat 2 = 1:47.88

Average time in heat 3 - 1:47.43

Mean time in heat 1 (4th and 5th times/ 2) = 1:47.23

Mean time in heat 2 (4th and 5th times/ 2) = 1:47.39

Mean time in heat 3 (4th and 5th times/ 2) = 1:47.56

It is a formula that was decided before the meet.

1st place from each of the 6 qualifying heats was spread into the 3 semi's by time in a 1-2-3-3-2-1 sequence. Wheating is #2, Andrews is #4. Same process for 2nd, 3rd, and the q on time.
