It was probably windier than a mother, i didn't watch the race so i don't know if they went out EXTREMELEY slow or what happened. But seeing these times made me ROFL

400: 1:07
800: 2:20.01
Wind readings were 2.5-3.0 for hurdles so they were probably really feeling it in the back stretch.
This means Gedyon closed in 1:59 so that's pretty damn fast. -
Sit and kick. Look at how close the top 6 were :)
The race video is uploading now - http://www.runnerspace.com/CaliforniaStateChampionships -
Girls race was far better... actually a race
-
when i said they went out in 2:20 i meant 2:22
-
Jogging compared to what's going on elsewhere in the meet. Amber Purvis missed Marion Jones' National HS record in the 100m by 0.03.

Closed in 54.8

It's a race, not a time trial. Nothing wrong with running a strategic race. I'm pretty sure that the runners are trying to win the race, not set a PR. Not sure why this makes you "ROFL".

seeing lots of guys so close to each other and basically tripping on heels for 800m is pretty funny. -

Which lets them practice for an Olympic final -

Seems to me these young runners do not learn from history. Maybe I should say runners sans kick do not learn from history. For over 40 years I have watch runner sans speed allow 1500/mile/1600m races to go out so very slow and then get hammered in the last 300 meters. Its kinda funny when you're 4 to 5 seconds slower in an 800 meters to allow the pace to be tactical.I can not recall when the slow tactic won the race for the runner sans speed. Olson should have hammered from the get go and (as PRE used to say) put the crap in their legs. -

1) How many times have you seen a miler with comparable times but an inferior kick hammer the whole way and win? He would have just served as their rabbit.
2) Why did you capitalize Pre? -
Not Olson, since he was doubling, but I would think those that weren't doubling would want to push the pace. That would have forced guys like Gedyon to make a choice.

1) At last years NCAA final. A runner that was 2 to 4 years younger than the field.
2) To make Aholes like you ask. -

Sorry about the my last 2), but I never saw a Stop Pre t-shirt. It was always STOP PRE. That is why I capitalized the great one's name. -

Force them to make a choice? If you're in a race, you don't save anything. He's not going to say to himself in the middle of the race, "oh, too fast better save some for the 3200m." They're going to go for it no matter what. And he would have won it even if it were 4:05. -

There's only one Great One and it isn't the big-mouth jerk who couldn't hold onto his bronze in the only race of his life that really mattered. He turned it into a "guts race" alright, but it was the guy kicking from behind that had the guts. And he set the stage for a whole town that can't win anything (unless they cheat).
Fortunately Olson didn't listen to this expert advice, and he scored some points. -

Coach D must stand for Coach Dick, wich you are. I won't say sorry to that. -
Just remember, we're talking about a state that usually takes a sub 4:10 to win, and where a 1:53 800 does not make the final...

Because they run 4:23 mile pace in Olympic finals.
