i've been challenged to run 12 in a 24 hour span.
1) How would you approach this challenge? I'm planning on doing a workout the minute the challenge starts of 5 x mile, after that one every 3 hours.
2) how many do you think you could do in a day?

You have to sleep sometime; it gives you better rest. If it were me, I would do a variation on what you are doing; Do a 6 x mile with ~ 10 minutes rest (basically full rest for this kind of thing) around 5:00 PM, cool down and take an ice bath; run one at 11:00 PM after a short warm up, go to bed around midnight, wake up at 10:00, start a warm up at 11:00, do 3 x mile with ~10 minute rest, do a normal cool down, warm up around 3:30 PM, do 2 x mile then. This is going to hurt.
I could probably do ~6-9 of these (cut 25-50% off of the plan I gave you), as I'm an 800 guy.
I think you should do 1 every half hour for 15 hours
Just for reference, when I was in 4:25 mile shape (HS), I ran a 24 hour relay where I averaged about 5:00 minutes per mile for 26 miles.
I wasn't trying for any time, that just turned out to be comfortable for me.
I imagine I could have averaged 4:40 for at least half of those if I was going for time. You can get by without sleep for one day if you had to. Having people around to cheer for you helps.

I don't believe this. Was that 4:25 mile difficult for you?
i remember there was a guy at nc state a few years back that ran 24 sub 5 miles in 24 hours and also won the krispy kreme challenge

He ran a 5minute mile, passed on the baton and maybe 20 minutes later ran another 5 minute mile and so on
Start a six by mile workout, with substantial rest, at 8 a.m.
Take a nap in the afternoon. Do an easy jog recovery.
Get up the next morning early and do six by mile, with substantial rest, at 7 a.m.
that's just over my pr and I ran 4:42 last year. This year I am going to need a lot of speedwork before I get near that again.
With my 4:47 PR, exactly ZERO.
i ran 13 miles at 4:39-4:43 during an 8 hour relay, running one every 30-35 minutes throughout the day. my legs were trashed for about a week afterwards. i think it was better to keep it rolling throughout the day because i never got too stiff or sore. doing a bunch early and then taking a break and coming back for more seems more difficult to me.
None, but then i couldnt run one mile in 4:40.
Depending on your mile time depends whether this is possible
A few years back prior to the London Marathon there were a few runners who ran a mile an hour for 1000 hours rested in between so you could do something similar
Its what i would do if i had to run 12 x 1 mile in 24 hours regardless of time a mile an hour that would be easy to do
Just go out and run 13 of them in a row. I assume like most Letsrun posters your half marathon PR is sub 59 mins......If 4:40 around 5k pace I think you are going to struggle to do 12. If it is closer to 10k pace you should be fine.

What happens if one of the miles is above 4:40? Are you eliminated from the challenge or does it just not count?
It was a team relay wrote:

You got it, except it was closer to an hour rest between each mile. We started with a relay team of ten and finished with six.
The long breaks allow you to fully recover, but the relay does trash your legs for a good week afterwards as mentioned by another poster.
I think it is more unlikely the 4:25 guy could have run half of his 26 miles at 4:40 pace. A couple or three at 4:40 would have maxed him out in my view.

Perhaps. It would have been a challenge to hit 4:40 for all 12. Anyways, I think this is a good reference point.
If we knew the 8hr relay guy's mile pr, we'd have a better reference.
i was a 4:02 1500 guy. a 4:25 miler could definitely do 12 if he was strong. i'm curious to see if the OP attempts it and how he does.
- 8 hour relay guy
As a 4:06 1500M runner back in the day I ran a couple of 4X 1600M averaging 4:40 with 400M jog between so if the OP can do at least 4:25 then no problem.
If it was me I would do it as follows:
3 sets of 3X Mile with 10-15:00 recovery between reps and 1 hour between sets the first day & 1-2 sets the next day. The second day can be used to make up for any slow miles the day before.

As a 3:55 1500 guy right now, I couldn't touch 4x1600 in 4:40 w/ 400 jog. You must have had some crazy endurance my man.
I think you are way underestimating how hard those last couple were. How did you legs feel the 4hours/ next day after your workout? The longer rest will make it a easier but running 12 miles at ~5k pace is hard no matter how you break it down.
