teams like oregon and stanford that have the luxury of running laboratory-conditions time trials would love the nationals qualifying to be based on time only
since not every school has that advantage, runners actually have to compete against other runners they intend to deny national berths
You're right. Chris Derrick, Elliott Heath, Ashton Eaton, Matt Centrowitz, Jordan McNamera, Andrew Wheating. These guys won't make it out of the first rounds at regionals.
Actually you should be ashamed of yourself for belittling guys who just came back from Berkeley and showing that they are the best. Tell me about the "laboratory-conditions" of competing against all the Pac 10 schools in windy Berkeley conditions. No guys like Wheating, Derrick, Centrowitz, Riley, Greer, McNamara, Heath, Acosta have shown that they can COMPETE with the best.
So what are you worried about? Let them go to regionals and earn their spots, same as everybody else.
The NCAA regionals is a year or two away from being buried. MOST coaches will welcome the descending order lists with open arms, not just the coaches from Stanford, Oregon, etc...
Little do you know, 72% of the coaches wanted to keep the old regional concept where it was head to head competition to reach the nc's but the big money schools won out to this change. You are probably correct about them going back to the old way because they don't want to have to work to get to the final!!!!!!!

regionals are ridiculous for the major conference schools; the SEC for instance just went through a massive battle for points and have to turn around a see the same guys again before NCAA? don't you think the guys who just went head to head at SEC and scored in the top3 don't deserve to just get ready for NCAA? regionals is a joke and a nuisance for the top athletes. I for one, want to see the best at NCAA; rested and ready to compete head to head against one another.

Which programs benefit from different setups is not something I'm terribly concerned about. What I do care about is a setup which benefits track fans. Maybe three or four coaches in the whole damn NCAA seem to care whether or not anyone actually watches or pays attention to their team.
I want to see qualifying to nationals to have something to do with, you know, actually winning and losing. This does not necessarily require a regional setup. But if our entire competitive year from January to June is five months of glorified practice sessions plus four meets that actually mean anything (conference & nationals, indoor and out), we'll still get our asses handed to us by "sports" like gymnastics and lacrosse and softball. Who the f*** cares about those sports? But they're on TV all the time.

Sort of like ACC Basketball tournament, then you have to turn around and play in the NCAA tournament? We whine too much in this sport. Lace 'em up and run!
Really? So you think that the 3rd. place finisher in all SEC events should get a free pass to nationals over people who run faster than them?
bad comparison as the regular season means something! have you heard of seeding?? guys seeded #1 play some swac team! the regular season of track and field has become meaningless with the regional system. a guy who has run 3:36 will still have to line up and run a bunch of hacks in some tactical race to advance.
The problem with this system is we do not get to race everyone at the NCAA first round.
So true, these Regional meets have nothing to do with "winners", they have to do with finishing in 12th place or better and extending as little energy as possible in achieving that rather dubious accomplishment.
I agree, cut off the head of the Regionals and bury it in a hole separate from the body.

i have no doubt that the oregon crew and many others can compete with the best. my point is that they should have to BEAT the best to advance in competition against the best of the best.
time-only qualifications ignore the fact that not every time is run under the same conditions. match up runners within a time range and have them run under the same conditions, say, at REGIONALS, and you'll be able to better size up who deserves to be at nationals

Regionals has nothing to do with the "best beating the best". It is about finishing within the top 12 in your region. And of course what if the top 24 are all located in say the East Region? In that case, 12 of the "best" get left out, but 12 undeserving runners from the West competing in the championships. Unlikely, but this points out the complete fallacy of the two Regionals setup.
What if the top 24 800 meter runners in the country came from UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, USC (the big time programs etc. in the Pac 10). In that case, 12 of the "Best" would never get chance to go to Nationals, because 12 "Lesser" runners from the East would qualify.
