Great race by Masai- she tried to run the sprint out of the ethiopians and she did! she soundly had melkamu beat.. but Ejigu won her first ever race (she has been around for more than 10 years (started to compete in 2001) at the world youth level. She has never won a race- Great inspiration for athletes that keep trying for that win!!!
Amazing result and a boost for her confidence.

This is false, which most people know. While she may have been in the shadow a long time, i personally watched her win a 5k in 2009 at BIG in 14:47.62. She and Shalane went head to head in the 5k at that meet, and both finished in the exact same time, with Sentayehu getting the photo finish win.
She's also won a few other races in her career. One at Tyson, one at Chiba, and another in an asics meet ages ago. I'm sure she's also won some smaller less recorded meets. -
lets be honest....how can the rest of the world compete with that?...crazy, unbelievable.....and top two women in the world didn't even run!...WOW!...just Sick
thank god only three can get in the worlds and olympics...unless transplanting continues, if you know what I mean! -
I wonder if that's the most depth for the first 4 runners in a 5k.

to follow up on another thread, this clearly suggests that there is a new drug on the market. stay tuned, maybe we will see the first sub14 5000m by one of the fast ethiopians this year!!
-
Sub 14 and sub 29 are long overdue.
-
WOW. There was a race last year of similar caliber and people wondered if this would be THE race that propelled African domination. This one is the same, this domination is amazing. Another note is that Sule Utara from Ethiopia who ran 14:44 (!!) is only 20 and was one of the top juniors in the world earlier.

To me, it's just a well paced race. No on ran extraordinarily faster than their previous lifetime bests.
Defar and Dibaba could have approached 14 minutes last year. -

Why do you say that? Shalane Flanagan has run 14.44, and she's a crappy American. If Americans can run within 30sec (33 actually) of the WR, then "real" runners (non-americans) can certainly run a lot faster. Look at Solinsky and Ritz/Teg, if they can break 27/13, then "others" must be able to run much faster (26.17/12.37), and just as legally. -
I watched the race on BBC online and i do not agree with your commentary at all.The race was run in a very ackward way.The first 1k was very swift followed by a very slow 2K after which Masai stepped foward( all the others were not willing to step forward) to push the pace to bring the field back to a reasonable time. She started with a 67secs lap then 2 laps of 68 and the race got faster and the field split up with only 4 athletes left trailing masai i.e the 2 ethiopians and Kibet who was strugling at the back. The two ethiopians simply used masai and in the last 50M Ejigu had the energy to outsprint masai by a very small margin .So Ejigu did not smoke masai if anything it was almost a photo finish between the two of them.

Get ready for an amazing, off the charts, nuts 5K at the adidas meet. Think this will be even better than the Bolt show. Good conditions and 1415ish?
-
How about Ejigu and Vivian Cheruiyot make their 10000 meters debut. They surely can break the world record.
-
Seemed very Rupp/Solinsky-esque to me. Good distance races. The announcers summation of the men's 200 field was quite refreshing.

Great Job Ejigu -
flattening out km splits ( of course linet or 'thopy didn't lead all the way, but they were closely attending & it gives ballpark figure )
2:54.03, 5:51.59, 8:52.05, 11:44.83, 14:30.96
or
2'54.03, 2'57.56, 3'00.46, 2'52.78, 2'46.13 (!!!)
14'30.96 -> 5000*(5000/870.96)^3 = 945987u
composites:
1000*(1000/174.03)^3 = 189727u
1000*(1000/177.56)^3 = 178634u
1000*(1000/180.46)^3 = 170160u
1000*(1000/172.78)^3 = 193875u
1000*(1000/166.13)^3 = 218101u
= 950497
therefore, "even-pace time"
= 14'30.96 * (945987/950497) =
~ 14'26.9
nothing much generous here ( but individual lap variation almost certainly wouda got it down below 14'25 ), but linet ran virtually all last 5 laps in front - wabbit wouda offered her close to 1s/lap, so she is in close to 14'20 shape behind big 2 'thopys + vivian -
Agreed

why would you assume even pace is better for her?
why would you assume a racer just ahead would save her ~1 sec/lap for the closing 2000m?
what statistical test tells you this qualifies as uneven running anyway? -

err...use commonsense if you know no physics/maths
why would you assume a racer just ahead would save her ~1 sec/lap for the closing 2000m?
go fetch a 6y ole post on t&f news by asterix called the "7% solution"
what statistical test tells you this qualifies as uneven running anyway?
excuse me ???
km splits varing from 3'00 to 2'46 ???
don't ask stoopid qusetions
