High Jump Scoring Question

This has baffled me on occasion too. The rule is (I'm pretty sure):

1) Highest height wins.

2) If more than one competitor clears the same highest height, the winner is the one that cleared it with fewer misses.

3) If more than one competitor clears the same highest height and they clear that highest height on the same attempt, the winner is the one with the fewest misses during the entire competition.

So in this case, both cleared 1.80 on their second attempt. Prior to that, first place had 2 misses, while second place had 3 misses. Thus the difference.

I think the reason that they can't go back to the second highest height cleared is because jumpers often pass heights. It would be too difficult to figure out all possibilities, thus fewest misses overall.

Thanks, I thought that might be it. Has it always been that way? The rule does clear up messes for separating 6th through 10th at the local JC meet, but I'm not sure a title should be decided that way.

Two misses and a make vs. a pass should go to the make. Pass at your own risk.
