how fast could lasse viren have ran the 10k???

A little bit faster than Lopes.

Probably about 27:25. In a race like the one he was in, the pacing is not really favorable to someone trying to set a record. The most economical pace is an even pace.

I once threw Lasse Viren off a cliff exactly 10K high. He bounced off a rock on his way down and I am sure that slowed him down a little bit but when he hit the rocks he hadn't even hit 22 minutes yet. (lol)

27:38 my ass. If he had tried for times all his life I think he couldve gone sub 27:20 at some point.

The incredible sprint finish he had during his 27:38 told me he had plenty left in the tank. He was notorious for under performing in non-olympic races. Had he set his sights on rabbited Euro-meets, then he could have probably gone 27:0x.

Had he lived in a country that is not frozen over half the year, given the chance to train/race on the superior mondo surfaces of today..then who knows sub 27 is not out of the question.

He did, though, train @ altitude on occasion (Columbia).

Uhh ok maybe I should have said "some hall-esque races" instead of "some races hall-esque" but I happen to like my new term. Hall-esque denotes a race that is run with the sole goal of beating the clock or getting under a designated time. I don't see anything dumb about that.

He was clean at the time because blood transfusions wasn't banned when he was running as far as I know. It was openly known he did it though, on one of his races the commentators even discuss it.

There are really too many variables. I mean the only time you can say he for sure could've ran is about 27:35 (27:38 subtracted by the fall). Other than that it is really just speculation. Anyway, I'll say that imo 27:25 sounds about right for WHAT HE COULDVE HIT IN 72. At the time of munich.

ps to the guy above me blood doping doesn't even help, although that's besides the fact that he most likely never did it. A magazine once offered him a million $ for the true answer you know... And I once read an interview with rolf haikkola where he did enough to convince me that he truly did (is he still alive) not believe that blood doping would help lasse at all. Apparently haikkola thought that it only helped people with a less than favorable hemoglobin count.

I'm guessing you're a 22 minute 5k guy (actually probably a girl) who wasn't around to watch lasse, just heard about him a few months ago, and read an infactual rumor spreading type person talking about how it's "common knowledge" that he doped. No one close to viren has ever said he doped and he never tested positive so how could it possibly be "openly known". The reindeer milk was a JOKE how many times do we have to tell you that. I think "jonny boy" and "sub165k" are about right: 27:20, maybe, maybe 27:15 tops in the perfect rabbited race.

The man could close. It's fascinating to watch on video the final stages of his Munich 5 & 10. His leg turnover is amazing, somewhere around 210-220 footstrikes p/min. over the last 200m.

I think he closed in 1.56.

I dont know but its hard to swallow that guys today are so much faster than viren was. Theres quite a few sub 27:10 guys and its just bizarre because when you watch the only races viren ever reallyyy raced (the 4 golds; the other 2 olympic races dont count, one he was old and the other he was untrained) he just seems on a different level from everyone else. In those 4 races - the VERY best of the time were in those races! - he seemed to have the best in the world beaten so easily. Thats whats magical about viren. So when you think about the fact that there are guys today running so much faster than he did, it really makes one think. So much to ponder.

too bad lasse didn't just let us know exactly how fast he was...
