I recently attended a college meet where several women runners (especially on one particular team) had their pony tails tied up in hair bows. I couldn't help reacting with "Really?? Isn't that a little childish for college?" I would think that college runners would want to be viewed as serious athletes and not as little girls in hair ribbons. Is my thinking out of line here?

I know this is kinda meant as a joke, but it is true on some level.
They think it looks good. Jjust because we're running doesn't mean we don't want to look good.

The Girl's on my college XC team do this. I personally find it ridiculously sexy on most of them.
I do not think this is what they are going for.
I think there's a "team bonding" component as well. The girls on my team do some really weird "team bonding."

I don't see how wearing a hair ribbon makes a woman a slut. I just think it is so childish. Do you know any grown women who wear pony tails tied up in bows? I don't, but maybe it is because I live in a cool area.

I believe it is also used as a courtesy to show other young ladies which "team" they run for.
In order to avoid awkward advances from those ladies on the "other side of the aisle", from a dating perspective, straight ladies wear ribbons to show that they are attracted to males and not their own gender.
Then how do you explain all the ribbons and such in softball players hair. Hmmmmmmmmm?
Softball and field hockey are were the practice originated, my good man. In that environment, there is much much more potential for confusion, hence the evolution of the ribboning.
Wow thats pretty insecure if a woman runner has to wear a hair ribbon to advertise that she is straight while running. Stupid, in fact. Like anyone cares.
On the other hand, I can understand why softball players might want to wear them, because they have to wear those manly uniforms, which forces them to lose their feminine identity somewhat. They ought to change those uniforms. Women shouldn't have to look like men in order to compete athletically. But hair ribbons are for silly little girls.
