I hate the way that a sit and kick style of racing is referred to as tactical. THAT IS SIMPLY ONE TACTIC. If you are not the strongest kicker in the field it is a poor tactic. It is also tactical to lead from the gun. Just a different tactic. It is also tactical to race surges the entire race. The list is endless.

Actually, leading from the gun to avoid a sit-and-kick race might better be viewed as a race strategy rather than a race tactic. A classic example of a race tactic might be to box in your chief rival with a lap to go. A not-so-classic example of a race tactic would be to say to the guy who is running next to you, "Hey, your shoe is untied," and then sprint away from him when he looks down.

and I feel that would be about as well thought out and as effective as the "sit and kick tactic".
The untied-shoelace tactic tends to work better in boxing.
I would like to see someone open with a 52 and run away from the field.

Agreed. I have never understood why a runner who knows that he is not the best kicker would not just force the pace and get the kickers out of the race. It just doesn't make any sense at all to me why someone who isn't a good kicker would allow a race to come down to the kick. I suck at kicking and I know that, which is why I never jerk around for most of the race and try to outsprint my opponents. I don't get why so many runners are terrified to be frontrunners.

Was that some deep insinuation that only a high schooler would frontrun? Wow, don't be so naive. I don't think he said trying to lead from the gun and going out like a maniac; just some people cannot afford everyone to be there with 200m to go, otherwise they'll get toasted by at least one other guy in the race. If you can string people out by forcing the pace midway, then you have less to worry about and can "run the kick out" of the kickers' legs. If you don't have awesome turnover, why make it a 3 quarter warmup then a quarter mile race?
