Hey I just found a bunch of old Runner's World magazines in my basement. Do you think they would be worth anything to anyone or should I just toss them? They are from 1972 to 2000, all in good condition.

I just started reading through a few and was surprised to see how much the publication has changed over the years. In the 70s it seems RW was all about the Elite athlete. With stories and workouts focused on Frank Shorter, Dave Wottle, Pre, ect... but now they are focused on the 4 hour marathoner... I wish they still made their magazine like these old ones.
In terms of monetary value, unless they're in "mint" or basically uncirculated condition, they're not worth anything. But they're worth reading.

I KNOW!! I got my June issue today, and it sucks.
You could probably find someone to take them off your hands. I've got some old ones, but not a lot of 80's and 90's.

You should send an issue to Shorter or Wottle and see if they would autograph one of thier articles. Then frame it. That would be cool.
I'd be interested. What city are you in?
I bet someone out there would love to get their hands on certain ones. Maybe one that their name was in to show the grand kids to have proof of their achievements.

I'm in Western North Carolina. Are you looking for certain mags or all of them? Shoot me an e-mail for more info.

Dave Wottle will gladly autigraph them. He's at Rhodes College in Memphis. There is a good recent interview at http://www.garycohenrunning.com/Interviews/Wottle.aspx
Donate them to a Phys Ed., program at a university with a decent library*, emphasize the rare and historical nature of the 1970's issues, they are rare by now...
You will probably have to drive them to the uni, or pay the shipping yourself... But, good to know your collection is in the good hands, and maybe some student will write a monster thesis on the progression of training methods using some of the early stuff you have...
I don't care how the elites train, I just want to "Run my 5k PR in just 4 weeks!"
If they made their magazine like 'these old ones' they would have gone belly up 25 years ago like so many others that cater to club runners ('The Runner', we hardly knew thee...)
Ain't no $ in real runners.
I've got two bound volumes: complete 1979 and 1980. Great reading w/ insight on "how they trained" in the day. Good profiles, too.
I had a bunch, but my wife threw them out along with my Honus Wagner baseball card.
"but my wife threw them out along with my Honus Wagner baseball card"
Certainly you meant "ex-wife."
Do you have a copy of the December 1972 issue?
Hi, if you still have the magazines I might be interested in purchasing them. Please send me an email:
Thanks.
