Hence why I said "somewhat" the exception. He spent almost no time on the track as a post-collegian compared to guys like Virgin, Salazar, Nenow, Meb et al.

It was 6 miles.
In 1965, Billy Mills broke his own American 10k record that he had set in his gold medal winning race at the 1964 Tokyo OG.
I did not know that
Billy Mills and how he won the Olympic 10k.
Since you dug this thread out from the past. Bringing it to the present… the discussion needs to include Grant Fisher, his new AR, and hopefully more from him to come.
Who cares how fast G F races when no one is looking.
* No qualifying heat, 10000m, Olympics or W.C.
* No more excuse: I got worn out in the fast heat.
* Is G Fisher going to race along the rail the first 8900m, as did L Viren and M Farah? Is G Fisher going to put himself in position to win from 8900m to 9200m? Is G Fisher going to put his big toes in the ground, take the lead at 9200m? TT in Santa Barbara or Santa Monica or where ever he prefers do not impress me.
Yikes… did you have a bad day or what?
actually, when have you stuck your toe out or in anything of consequence on the world stage?
You need to open your eyes or turn on the TV. Grant Fisher raced very well in the 10k at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and 2022 World Championships - kind of big races with big audiences tuned in. Too bad you missed it. But alas, your negativity must be based on last years Sound Running 10k where Grant demolished the AR narrowly beating Mo Ahmed (last time I checked a pretty good runner/racer). Dam good race. Yes race as those two guys were busting it and it happened that the rest of the field couldn’t hang. My hunch is you did watch that race yet for some reason you have a bee in your cap about Grant Fisher, Bowerman, time trials, rabbitted races and possibly more. I remind you about the young Mr. Fisher when he set the 5k AR in Brussels this summer. Similar race to the SR 10k in that it was rabbited, two guys eventually broke away from an amazing group of racers and battled to incredibly fast times. People were watching that race I would also guess.
Relax, and enjoy greatness when you choose to watch Grant Fisher race. The kid is amazing. Hope he can keep it going by sticking his toe in it and winning a medal on the biggest of stages. Which by the way he earned the chance to race at beginning just a year and a half ago.
Big toes ... . How did you sprint coach train you to sprint?
Regarding the remainder of your post, a golf clap.
