what does everybody think about jack daniels training?
It works pretty well for me. Just remember that although the book is very specific about what to do each day, and what pace to run it at, you know your body better than Mr. Daniels does, and you may need to tweak things to make Daniels work for you. Overall, a very good training plan, though, if you want some structure.
I calculate Daniels' "intensity points" in my training log, which I found in Daniels Running Formula (his book). The points are based on distance and pace relative to your threshold pace (I set up a bunch of tables and formulas in Excel, part of which I took from an Excel file posted online a couple of years ago).
I find that the intensity points are a little more sensitive to miles than to 'true' intensity, but in general it is helpful to have a metric that distinguishes between a recovery mile and a tempo mile.
While it isn't particularly useful to know that a given workout was 10 or 22 or 31 "points", it is nice to have an objective measure of my training week-to-week. I can look back at past weeks in my log and figure out how roughly hard I have been working. It acts as a kind of early warning system to prevent over-training and injury.
If others do this, or have [constructive] thoughts on it, I'd love to hear about it.
I'm a simple man and Daniels is too complicated for me to follow on a long term basis. I'd feel like an accountant rather than a runner.
i like daniels, it made a huge difference in my career, id like that people bash it. i think it works very well, it turned me from a 17:39 5k runner to a 16:20 5k runner
Hi,
regarding these "Points". Is this something that has been introduced in the 2nd edition of the book? I have read the first edition a long time ago but I
can't remeber this "Points" thing.
Thanks!
