As the fastest real christmas tree in america, I prefer the metal spikes. I am sure those fake substitutes that come in a box would prefer the other.
They aren't plastic they're ceramic, and they're supposed to be lighter than the metal ones. Lighter = faster, but probably more so for sprinters in these minor fractions of weight.
The real question is why do most tracks not allow you to use christmas tree spikes. My understanding is that they do less damage to the track as they compress it rather than stab and scrape it.
