I know this is quite a bit (25 seconds or so?) slower than his PR, but unless I've missed something he hasn't raced in a while. This is a pretty decent rust-buster, and with the steeple as weak as it is right now, he's a possible national title contender this year, and at least adds some depth to the event.

We'll see. He has been racing wayyy off form the past couple of seasons... this season might be make or break time. He'd be better off trying to focus on the roads- the steeple is a dog with fleas, unless you're a sub 8:13 kinda guy.

Was there and watched the race - he looked under control and never really turned it on until the bell lap. Definitely not his best effort - just a good rust-buster for him.

I think he means that it is a burial ground for lesser talent distance types who can not succeed at 5K. There are some real runners involved, but the poster seems to feel that those who run slower than 8:13 are less talented.
On a somewhat related note, does anyone know if we can ever expect to see Dan Lincoln back in the sport? He's in med school now, right?

What I mean is that for an aspiring 'professional' runner, the steeple is a waste of time unless you are capable of running in the 8:13 range. Slattery is a tough runner and from what I hear a pretty good guy, but it seems like he has been toiling away for a looong time in the event without every really coming near that championship finals level. After his past couple of seasons, it would seem to make sense for him to try a different event or surface (ie the roads).
Why in the name of all that is good and decent would he take time off during his prime to go to med school if he was planning on coming back to steepling?
