Penn Relays 4xmile

Oregon may be the favorite and they have more than 4 guys who can go under 4 minutes, but that doesn't mean they WILL win it. Competitive distance relays often fall short of maximum pace because the individual legs become their own races and are often strategic. I'm sure arkansas has 4 guys who are close to 4 minutes in the mile and they have ulrey, the fastest miler (based on 1500 PR) in college. If they race with him on an A squad they should give oregon a battle.

Also no guarantee that Oregon runs their best team and if so how tired their guys may be.

As mentioned on another thread it could come down to Wheating VS. Ulrey pt. 2.

Watch out for Duke...2 guys at 3:42 for 1500 this year plus 2 more at 3:48, 3:49

Watch out for Maryland ... they may not have the times, but they have the heart!

Michigan for the win. Warhurst has a knack for getting his boys ready for Penn. Even the last couple of years they have been in the hunt with relative unknown milers. Williams will be tough on the anchor.

Are there live stats available somewhere?

Is Flotrack there? Banned?

Albany has 4 guys @ 4:06 or better, if they bring it they probably will show up better than 4th to last.

Good point. Albany has been doing a great job this year, but somehow seems consistently underrated--I'm not sure why.

Depending on how they distribute their runners among the various races, Syracuse is another Upstate NY team that could be strongly competitive in this 4 x mile.

I dont know why this thread even exists. I'm glad people are getting excited about Penn and think talking about races and hyping them up makes them exciting. IN that light we are about to unveil our Penn Relas previews in the next 30 minutes. But I'll share some info on the 4 x 1 mile for you.

Thre is no doubt as to who will win this race. Assuming Oregon runs it's A team, they will win. You can read our preview below but just realize their top 4 PRs are as follows, Matt Centrowitz (3:36.92 1,500), Andrew Wheating (3:38.60 1,500), Mac Fleet 3:57.70, AJ Acosta (3:58:08).

If those four runners toe the line for Oregon and don't drop the stick, fall down or pull up with an injury, Oregon will win. If they don't, I'll shut the website down for day.

The question to me is does Oregon try to save Fleet or Wheating for the 4 x 800. I'm very fascinated by seeing the Ducks try to win all three relays and the team that wins the 4 x 800 often isn't the best team but rather the team that wimped out and focused on just that race instead of running DMR and/or 4 x mile. It looks like they may and run Mike Maag on the 4 x mile.

If they do run a different lineup, things get a bit more interesting but they are the only studly team in this race.

From the Penn Relay meet site: Arkansas(AK), which finished a close 2nd to Oregon at the indoor NCs, will be without the services of anchor Dorian Ulrey, who is redshirting outdoors.

Anyone know if this is true and Ulrey is redshirting?

While I agree with you that they are the heavy favorites, if Wheating has to run 2 other hard races before it and possibly one or two of the other guys, who knows. Wheating doesn't have a history of blowing people out and if they other guys can't run away and wheating waits till the very end on tired legs, things can happen.

Maybe they rest Centro for everthing BUT the 4 x mile and put Centro on the end. I don't think anyone can close any faster than Centro over the last 400 so perhaps they give Wheating leg 3 and have him sit and blow away a 2-3 second lead for centro and he carries on a slinky race, letting them work hard to catch him and then slamming them over the last 400.

That said, don't forget you said you'd shut the site down for a day if...

With only 2-3 scholarships for the entire track & cross-country team, I think that is pretty darn good! Why others choose to hate on a team that doesn't have the resources to pay for scholarships like a team like Oregon is beyond me.

I know Oregon's PRs are impressive, but there are a couple of schools who could put together a solid team.

1. Arkansas: Ulrey (3:56 mile), Phillips (4:00 mile), Chinchar (4:02 mile), and Russell/Boyer (4:07 milers)

2. Georgetown: Bean (4:05 mile), Banks (4:03 mile), Bumbalough (3:58 mile), and Miller (4:03 mile)

I'm sure there are others, but these two teams come to mind. If the race sits around and the slower legs are still in the race after two legs, Arkansas and Georgetown could be hot on Oregon's heels with 2 legs to go, and Ulrey/Bumbalough could challenge Wheating/Centrowitz on the anchor.

Don't give Oregon the title yet...
