An athlete I coach is having trouble putting together a full race. He is a High School senior with a 400 meter background who moved up to the 800 last year (ran 1:58). He has the speed in workouts, closing out in 52-53 for the final 400 and has reasonable endurance running 5:10 pace for 5k, which was his first ever. However, he can't seem to put together a great 800 or mile. Any advice on a workout that could help?

600 meters @ 800 Date pace
2 x 300-200-200 @ goal 800 pace
Workout Example #2:
6 x 400-200-200; 400 @ 60 sec, 200 @ 28-30 sec
Workout Example #3:
12 x 200 "Muscle Memory Workout" @ 800 goal pace (27-29 sec)
Workout #4:
1000-800-600-400-200 @ 2 mile goal pace
100-200-300-400 @ goal 800 pace
