Just because he "set out" to do something at one point in time doesn't mean that he has to stay that course no matter what.

Instead of being a "marathon coach" he has been a distance coach and in the past 4 or more years it seems like at every world championship qualifier or olympic trial he has multiple athletes qualify despite having a small pool of runners. Not only that but Rupps domination of the NCAA and indoor AR in the 5K, Adams 6th at World Cross and Kara's marathon debut and Boston race are additional highlights of his coaching.

You obviously don't like the guy, and maybe if today he was only a "marathon coach" with a stable of athletes who were not really producing you'd have that and a point. Instead you have a guy who has really coached one marathoner over the past few years and she's been phenomenal. His record looks pretty damn good as of late.

As to the early years, well those were his early years. What coach starts out great? He lived, he coached, he learned, he improved. Now he's damn good.

He's a great coach. Nike (his employer) named him Nike Coach of the Year.

Exactly, Rupp could have beat half of these guys at 10K (at the level they were at when the joined salazar) his freshman year at Oregon and by his 3rd year he would have mopped them up.

They were good runners relative to the average college runner, but it seems like you were expecting them to go out and run 2:07 when in all reality they probably couldn't even handle the training that Rupp was going thru as an 18 year old.

Maybe. But he has yet to prove it in the marathon. Everyone of the coaches that I listed in the Original thread have coached athletes thats Marathon times have exceeded all other events.

For example Ryan Hall's marathon is superior to any othe performance that he has run. Same with Brett Gotcher and Brian Sell.

Alberto has NEVER done this with ANY athlete that he has ever coached.

And for the guy that took shots at the talent of Alberto's original crew. You mean to tell me that none of them were capable of running 2:18. All of them had performances at other distances that were equivelant to a sub 2:12.

I agree that Rupp was as good as they were at 18 years old. My question is Which one of these athletes was not talented enough to break 2:18 under the proper coaching?

This is a great thread because it attacks Coach Salazar at the core without ever bringing up drugs. We all know that drugs are just accusations and can not be proven. You do an excellent job of pointing out where Coach Salazar has failed. The responses are equally as telling. People have taken shots at your intelligence or even your mother but not one has presented any hardcore numbers to prove you wrong. Good job.

not to fuel the OP, but its utterly pathetic the depth in womens marathoning. sure you can say paula is an outlier, but ndereba (spelling) has run 2:18 or so if im not mistaken. debuting 10 minutes slower than the WR is not that impressive. womens running in general for that matter is just lacking depth. ryan hall debuted with a 2:08, only 4 minutes off the WR. hell even gotcher ran within 6 minutes of the WR....

3rd place for the fields she was competing against isn't all that impressive. its good, but for her credentials id say its arguably underachieving.

Hell, Chad Johnson ran 2:15 with the Hansons but never broke 2:20 with the Nike group. I see what you are getting at.

I honestly never looked up Dan's times. The times that I was quoting was just off of the top of my head. The exact times make my point even clearer. Thanks.

The OP said 27:45 and 2:11:45 so I wouldn't say that makes him an idiot and yes Dan Browne actually has run that fast.

As pointed out above, it's not how you do your first several years as a coach, but after you have been coaching for a while that should start to define you as a coach. Alberto started with some has beens, and guys who would have been hard pressed to make to 20 at NCAA cross country. Hell, maybe top 40.

You're comparing someone who primarily coaches track and cross country runners to the depth of a strictly marathon focussed farm?

Hansons has been around for how long now training large groups of marathoners and they are running the equivilent of about 27:50 10K's and slower.

al sal claims you cant be the top 5 in your event unless you're on EPO.

The OP listed 3 times, all which were wrong. So yes that does make him an idiot for posting without having anything correct. And then he posted again, again posting a wrong time. Brown never went 27:38, the guy clearly is a special needs person.
