Exactly that is my point. If you saw the 150M race he ran last year the race was basically done after 75M. He could have coasted the rest of the way and still won.
I wonder how the promoters are going to make this money back considering that Ostrava has a population of less than 350,000. Those tickets must be very expensive or Ostravans love track and will be turning out in large numbers. I guess I don't understand the business side of some of these deals.
Are you implying that the longer the race the more the athlete should be paid?
Or perhaps that the slower the athlete, the more they get paid?
If that's the case, I'll be contacting the meet organisers because it would take me about 36 seconds to run the 300, and therefore a higher appearance fee than Usain. Wahey! Maybe I should offer to run a marathon there instead, that would take me hours and I'd earn an absolute fortune!
I am guessing TV money. but if you think about it, paying elite athletes really doesn't make a lot of sense. How many more people ran boston because of Hall? Not a lot.

Yes but this is for at most a few hours of work. Pre race interviews, warming up, competing in the race, post race interviews and signing autographs. Not bad, not bad.

Are you talking about that as the amount of capital you own or how much you make in a year?
Bolt is getting that in a day. He's going to be getting many other paychecks.
A lot of people may make that in a year, but not many people in the real world are getting that in a paycheck.
...and Bolt deserves it no. Hopefully some of his wealth effect will trickle down to other athletes.

You would think the payout would be weighted more to his performance than him just showing up...what's the motivation to run fast when it's 1/10th of just showing up and running?

Any record incentives matter far less than hum showing up in the first place. Everyone buys their ticket before the race, not afterwards. If you put most of the money on performance, then he's less likely to show up since he's not assured of as much money. Check out the London Marathon. The prize money is a fraction of the appearance fees. It's not as if Derek Jeter gets a modest base pay and most of his money is weighted on performance. He's guaranteed to show up (aside from injuries).

He'll get most of it. A cut goes to his agent, and then he has to pay any taxes levied by the Czech Republic, and whatever income taxes are due in Jamaica.
