The lose Rupp and still have Wheating, Centro, McNamara, Acosta & Fleet. Most of those guys have been under 4 or its 1500 equivilent at least a couple times now.
They need to go to Penn this year and take down the AR for 4 x Mile.

not interested, more concerned about international competition.
derrick and german, that's all that matters in the NCAA
Fleet and Acosta broke 4 this weekend. Wheating is an olympic stud who should be able to do it on demand.
Have Centro and McNamara or anyone else done anything this season?
They certainly do have an impressive crop of talent in the middle distance events. Fleet is easily the most talented middle distance freshman in the country right now. It's nice to see Acosta stepping up his game again.

Indoors is not much of a concern, more of a bonus. Centro and McNamara have not (may not?) raced indoors so far this season to my knowlege. AJ has run either sub for and/or it's equivalent at least 3-4 times now. He hasn't gotten much faster, but he has done it a handful of times. Fleet, Wheating and Centro can all blow it away in a good race. McNamara spent so much time injured he may have some more upside as well but I think 3:55-3:56 may be his ceiling.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Greer run under 4 sometime soon as well.
I think Wheating and Greer both just went 1:46 to win their heats at washington.

Correction, wheating won his heat in 1:46.3 and greer narrowly lost the "fast" heat by 1/100'th in 1:47.3

Just because they know where 5 of them are, it doesn't mean they shouldn't look for Rupp.
Get a clue.
I too think that Elijah Greer can go sub 4 right now. But, he is such a talent at 800 meters I don't know if he will get a chance to run the mile this year (maybe Outdoors). Matt Centrowitz is going to redshirt the Indoor season to focus on Outdoors. I think that Mcamara has used all his indoor eligibility, but has one more year for Outdoors. I would love to see Mac Fleet and Wheating in the same race. Both of them are capable of 3:55 or bette right now.
On my DIII team, we have 4 current sub 5 milers.
Actually, if you consider their outdoor track lineup, Michael Maag probably is a sub-4 guy right now. I believe he will run the mile at the next UW meet and ran 7:52.99 today.
Since you have insider knowledge, why should Greer not try at least one 1500 or mile to test his range? There are plenty of chances in meets where they don't need the points at 800.
I don't think they will run Greer at 1500 or mile because he is a freshman with championship point making capabiliy at 800 meters. I believe Lananna will run him in some 400 meter races to work on his speed and some more 800's to work on race tactics. Then, if he can stay healthy, he has a shot at picking up a couple 800 meter points at nationals.
Let's face it, why would they run him at 1500/mile, when they have Fleet, Wheating, and Centro (and maybe Maag and MacNamara for outdoor season) at the mile? Those other guys (other than Fleet) have a lot of experience, the one thing that Greer is short on.

I think it is better said that Fleet and Greer could be the most talented middle distance freshman in the country, at least as measured by their NCAA rankings in their respective events. Fleet will have 2nd fastest time to date in the NCAA in the mile, while Greer will have the 3rd fastest time to date in the NCAA in the 800m, just out of 2nd by .01 seconds.

And the scary thing is that Greer ran comfortable until kicking it in the last 120m.
Stay tuned.
greer already ran 1:47 as a hs junior. but if you hold him out of the mile now because of points later at nationals, that makes no sense. and lack of experience is no reason to not give him experience.

4:00.43 three years ago, and coming off 13:41 last spring at 7:52 yesterday.
