With all the discussion about Haile versus Scott Jurek I thought I'd post a link to a stunning slow-motion video showing one of the best finishes in the history of running, that happens to also highlight the wonderful running form that both Haile and Tergat possess.

Awesome footage. To begin the discussion, I feel that Jurek would win in this situation because he knows when and what to eat. The Olympic 10,000 is all about nutrition. He would have enough of a lead to log-roll the finish line.

interesting that Geb is so much shorter than Tergat but Geb's stride length is about the same. That might explain some of his greatness - a lightweight upper body combined with the levers of a guy 6 inches taller than him.

Thanks for the vid. I found it interesting how both Haile and Tergat have higher back kicks than the 2nd Ethiopian. Guess that's why they beat him.
Notice how towards the finish when Tergat starts to lean his stride shortens while Haile who stays upright maintains a long full stride. Makes you think a lean isn't always the best thing in a distance race, at least from 10 meters out.

Yeah it was more of a stumble. That's what it looks like when every inch of your being wants you to reach the line before the guy who has managed to pull 6 inches in front of you.

It may not be intuitive, but stride length is usually about the same for (non-jogger) people running the same pace. Speed is stride frequency multiplied by stride length. If you've looked at any video of a high level race, you may have noticed that stride frequency is pretty similar among most distance runners. Holding speed constant, that must mean the stride length is also about the same.

Think of stride length as the amount your center of mass moves during a stride. It has do with how hard your push-off is, not how long your legs are. After all, there is air time when both your feet are off the ground at the same time. So it's more like left-right-left-right leaping rather than how far you can extend your legs.

Many so called experts would say they're extending the front leg too far out in front of them. Great video. The best up close and personal.

Put some dirt and rocks on the track. No way Geb could have stayed hydrated or ingest enough calories.

Heh heh. I know it's been mentioned many times before, and isn't shown in this particular video, but Tergat did have to awkwardly dart out way to the outside a bit before this video shows after being boxed in, in all likelihood causing him to loose just that much of his energy reserves to make a difference when they make those famous final strides to the line.

I've noted this several times before--but Tergat was VERY clearly & deliberately boxed by Mezegebu (the 2nd Ethiopian) and had to slow, drop back, and then dart out to lane 2 to get around. It was a very uncool move by Mezegebu and it may well have cost Tergat the race. And I say this as the world's biggest Geb fan. Watch the footage of the full last 3 laps or so.
