What the heck are you talking about? Look how much she improved last year while still having to race often and fulfill collegiate obligations. She'll be fine.

I'm not being sarcastic at all. Wetmore has fried every post-collegiate athlete he's worked with and Barriger won't be an exception. At some point, she's going to have do the right thing and move to the PDX. I know she had a phenominal year and I enjoyed watching it but, she's not going to be able to make the next level jump she need unless she gets into a group like the Oregon Project. However, if you're wearing that NB on your gear, they won't let her touch the Nike campus. Hopefully her contract is a short one so she can opt out and become the champion she deserves to be.

I think your partially correct. With NB as a sponsor, if she chooses to dope she will not have the medical protection that the Nike athletes currently have.

The only person on that list that doped is Marion and I don't think you will find any evidence of her time at Nike on the campus or in the company history. You can speculate all you want about fast runners running fast but, the simple truth is, the Oregon Project is clean. The athletes excel within the program because of excellent coaching and top-notch resources. Barringer will need those resources if she wants to compete with the Ethiopian and Kenyan women. I just don't see how NB can get her what she needs.

3 of those 5 are sponsored by Nike.

And zero have done any signficant training in Portland, which was labeled as a prerequesite for success earlier in the thread. Pierce has the same coach and facilities as Uceny, Cragg, Hall, Kastor, etc, and she's doing just fine.

Why wouldn't she be able to train with the Nike runners? The Mammoth group has runners from Adidas and Asics training together. Isn't that discrimination by Nike? If you think about it.. she gave Nike 4 great free years by running for CU. It's the least they could do. Her sucess ( or lack of ) as a pro will not hinder Nike sales in the slighest. They won't sell one less Lunar shoe b/c someone saw Jenny in NB and decied to go w/ their lt wt trainer.

She can train with anyone. But any coach under contract with a competing brand will be barred from coaching anyone that has an active endorsement with another brand. Salazar, Jerry and Cook, for example, can't coach anyone that has a deal with a shoe company other than Nike. There are some exceptions, such as when the athlete is grandfathered in, as Mo Greene was when he switch to adidas and maintained his relationship with John Smith.

Provincialism is not limited to America. It's human, you'll find it worldwide.

On the original post, Wetmore had JB running at a world elite level last year. There are numerous examples of world elite athletes who don't train in Portland who stand on the podium regularly on the WAT and at major championships.

Women's steeple, 800, 1500, 5000, 10000, marathon, all medalists except one (KG) at 2009 Worlds and 2008 Olympics don't train in Portland. SF wasn't there yet.

So, what JB does 2010 running for NB and Wetmore vs. Salazar, Schumacher or Rowland and NIKE remains to be seen. She showed great promise as a pro last year.

And finally, NB has enough money to make the resources (physio, facilities, etc.) she needs available to her.

This reliance, or assumed need, of resources is a huge issue with the state of running in the U.S.

A pair of shoes, some healthy food, and being surrounded by positive people is all that is needed for a super talent to succeed. running is simple.
