Anyone know who it is and what weight 'cause I don't?
Chris Solinsky, 181 and 3:57 miler
Then or now?
Can't find any verification now, but Paul McMullen broke 4:00 when he was 180 or over.
Jack Fath 190 3:59.5 June 68 villanova Relays.
How about Geoff Capes age 17 6'6" 245lbs running the mile in 4:48 wow! and then he went on to put the shot 71'1" in his career.
The heaviest man to break a 5 minute mile however was a 295 lb 6'3" Mike Ward (4:59.9)
Christian Hesch 190 6'2" ran 13:58 for 5000 just as impressive as a sub 4 if not more so.
Solinsky is not a pound over 160.
McMullen COULD have broken 4:00 at over 200 when he was transitioning from football to track in college, but probably was more like 180 when he actually put the spikes on and did it.
13:58 is healthy, but 4:00 is more like a 13:50-52
An American guy on Flotrack did it this summer, he was 175-ish (and about 6'4")

13:58 for a 190 lb guy is definitely more impressive than a 3:59 mile. Everyone knows big guys have capability to run fast in the sprints but endurance to keep 4:30 mile for 3.1 miles is mightily impressive. Hesch is a freak of nature.

What is your source for such a high number?
A quick search for a site more authoritative than your post yielded the USTAF website, which lists him as 6'1" 165 lbs. I've never weighed the guy, but his size is a typical one and rather easy to gauge from pictures. He could be somewhat less than 165, but 181 is like saying that he's also seven feet tall. He's plainly not.

The Capester has some really impressive PB's for the sprints too. His bio Big Shot is also a great read.

Oh wait! You said HEAVIEST, not HAIRIEST.
My bad.
Your post brought up a candidate in my mind.
Don Paige.
When I was running at the University of Virginia we had a guy on our team, Greg McMurtry, that ran a 3:57 when he was weighing 245. He was scary looking when he ran.
yeah, i was a doofus that year ('01)for not finding a good mile...after that i dropped to a consistent 175ish..course i never actually broke 4 on the track so...
McMullen told me his race wt was around 168 but that it would fluctuate as high as 180ish...wouldn't be surprised if he broke 4 @ that weight...
on the flip side, culpepper HAS to have the "leanest" ratio of any sub 4 guy, 6-1 and 127...1.74lbs/inch, i'd like to see someone beat that!
cheers, dude-

Umm... Ever heard of Laban Rotich?
5'4 and 99lbs for 1.55lbs/inch!
http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/biographies/country=ken/athcode=20604/index.htmlI'm pretty sure Paul McMullen did run a sub 4 mile when he was 182lbs (83kgs). Peter Snell's weight is always listed as 80kgs (176lbs), so he'd have to be right up there, but I'm not too sure that is correct as he is only 5'10" and didn't look that heavy (I know he had strong legs, but his upper body was not that big).
Nick Symmonds maybe? 3:56i miler, 3:40 1500 pr and 165 lbs and only 5' 10".

Ritz beats that according to his usatf bio. He's 5-8 117. That's 1.72lbs/inch.
I think that Garth Gilmour has written that Peter's
weight was a bit under 170 at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

I think Rotich takes the cake on the men's side, but on the women's side, I doubt anyone has a lower ratio than Vivian Cheruiyot than her height and weight listed in T&F News' world rankings this month. 5-1 84lbs. 1.38lbs/inch. Wow!
5-7 ,180 .
