Byron "Whizzer" White was an all-american running back, Heisman runner up, and professional football player, so probably would have taken Thomas head to head. Don't know if he ever ran one though.
Solid time, can anyone document this?

Well, now I've seen 1979 and 1980 but no actual results. Does anyone have the actual results?
I've seen enough people claim bogus times to be skeptical until I see them.
I'd have to see that verified. More likely 11 hours and 3 minutes. He's always been heavy and overweight. If verified by someone other than a political hack, very nice.
I sincerely doubt he could ever have run a 3:11. He's not built for it.

more likely he did the half if they have one. He just doesn't seem like a marathoner in my opinion.

I missed that. That doesn't mean he didnt run nor does it mean he didnt run near that time. But I have to concede that I missed that.

I agree it doesn't mean he didn't do it, just that, like me, nobody has been able to find it. I'd like to see the results of that year to either show that he did or didn't. Just as telling, nobody is saying they saw it and he's NOT there. I just can't believe that there are no '79 MCM results anywhere.

Dude, he's not Scalia. I don't think you have to be built a certain way to run 3:11. You just have to train enough.

so it appears the marine corps marathon people believe it, enough to put it on their website.

Why is that so difficult to believe?

Because it seems like everything is out there somewhere. Someone on letsrun must have run it.

He must have been a bandit. Why didn't that come out in his confirmation hearings? Were the senators just so focused on his love of pornography and his salacious remarks to a co-worker that they overlooked the really important stuff?

it may seem like "everything is out there somewhere" but its not.
when i got out of lawschool in the early 90s i was at a mid size lawfirm. NONE of the attys had computers on their desks, they got them a few months after i joined.
the internet is a very different place today than it was 20 years ago. i think many people in college/hs do not realize how slow the internet was.
when i got my 1st computer, i upgraded to 8 of ram, from the standard of 4 and was told i would "never need more than 8" dial up had speeds of 14.4 etc...
further, in the 70s many races were still being run with popsicle sticks at the end and for many races i dont think results were kept long. races were often done by local clubs and were often informal - even some marathons. the results may well have been kept by the guy who ran it and if he lost them, quit putting on the race, or did not hand them over to the next guy they were lost forever. i would expect the mcm to be in the same boat.
That term ("marathoner") means so little anymore.

Thanks for talking down to me but we're the same age.
I'm not talking about some podunk race here, the Marine Corps Marathon is a fairly significant race.
Thanks for the insight though, I'll be sure to go to you next time I need a reminder on what life was like when I was growing up.
