What's the fastest split you know of in an all-HS 800 race?
I saw an interview with Mike Granville (current national HS record holder at 1:46.45) where he said that he passed the 400 in 51 en route to his record (and claimed to have hit 600 in an incredible 1:17! -- a bit tough to believe, but certainly within his abilities). Do you know of any faster first-lap split?

My old hs coach said he was in a race at the Iowa State meet when joseph kiptanui went through in 49 and came back in a 60 for the state record 1:49.
I saw a conference meet in CT where some dude opened up in :50 but came back with a 70 for a 2:00. He lost to some dude who split :55, 64 for a 1:59.
It sucked for him that he lost by fractions of a second after having a huge lead for most of the race. It sucked even more that the winning time of the 400 that day. was :51
Another Iowan, Aaron Stockstell, opened in 51 or 52 in the medley and split a 1:49.9. What was even more impressive was that he and his team were in the slowest of 3 sections in the class 2A race--when Aaron got the stick he was already 2 seconds ahead of 2nd place, and you can imagine how far ahead he finished. It was the fastest time in the nation that year when it was run.
Stephen Williams from Illinois a few years back was one of the fastest 400 guys in the state and would usually go out in 50 but come back in like 61 or so for a 1:51. He would tank pretty bad the second lap but he was able to hold on enough to win state 2 years in a row.
I saw a guy go out in about 51 on a 200m flat track once. He was trying to win states from the slow heat, ended up running like 2:01 I think.

Wow! Someone needs to teach that boy pacing, particularly given that it was just a sectional meet.
If he was able even to *finish* an 800 after going out in 50, I'd imagine he was capable of at least 1:53. What did that guy end up running that season?
I went out in 52.2 in the iowa high school state meet in the slow heat of the sprint medley, ended up splitting 1:54, we won out of the slow heat by 3 seconds.
Went out in 50.7 once in a college meet and was in 3rd place, struggled home to a 1:51....it hurts real bad doing it like that. A week later I ran 55.2 and 55.5 for a 1:50.7 and it felt like I jogged.

It seems the only difference between high schoolers and the best of all time is a 52 second lap vs a 60+ one.
Yeah, it was written up in Runner's World back when they still covered athletics...

was this in 2006 (judging by your name)? If so, the results don't confirm your post since the race was won in 1:58.31.
