So, I'm in the library studying for my nutrition final and I came across something pretty interesting and wanted to know if anybody has heard of or tried soda loading before. It is where you ingest some baking soda to lower your blood ph prior to a race so during the race your blood ph doesn't rise as much or as quickly allowing you to run harder, longer.
This is what the chapter says about it
"Some athletes consume sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in the belief that it will help neutralize the buildup of lactic acid in muscles. Whether or not soda loading actually produces an ergogenic effect is controversial. No improvement in performance has been seen in short-term exercise lasting 30 to 100 seconds. However, comparative studies that evaluate events lasting from 2-10 minutes, where lactic acid build up is most likely, have shown some positive results related to interval training performance.
Bicarbonate loading can produce negative effects. Athletes who follow thie regimen report side effects such as intestinal discomfort, stomach distress, nausea, cramping, diarrhea, and water retention. Although bicarbonate loading is not banned, it does have serious health-related consequences. Bicarbonate loading increases blood alkalinity and influences high blood pressure. Anyone with high blood pressure (hypertension) should not bicarbonate load."
