Anyone know anything about his rough race this morning? What happened?

h
i believe this is the first time kosgei has ever finished worse than 2nd in any national championship competition in which he's participated.
He was in the lead with like 500 to go, then it seemed like he realized he was going to get beat and just jogged it in. He didn't look like he was hurt or in obvious pain, he just looked like he decided that if he wasn't going to win, he wasn't going to try.
Ricky Flynn happened! Thats all.

I was one of the volunteers working the finish line today, Peter collapsed as he came into the "coral" and myself and another volunteer had to practically carry him to the medical tent at the finish. He was in there quite a while and he sure looked like he was totally spent from the race. Not sure what other people saw out on the course as I was not there, but I can tell you this; don't go knocking a kid who has just busted his butt running a national race, you may not know all the facts behind what you saw on the course!
Coral? Was this race at a resort with a beach?
Talked to a Hamilton spectator after the race and I guess Kosgei had been sick leading into the race.
Heart condition that has never bothered him in a race before this. Not something to race through. Winning nationals doesn't seem reason enough if your heart has a legitimate risk of exploding.

It just shows once again that one should never make assumptions based on raw results. There was speculation on the internet messageboards (which I unfortunatley contributed to in my initial report) that Hamilton junior Peter Kosgei, the defending NCAA Div.III champion, had "given up" after surrendering the lead late in Saturday's race, struggling home in 43rd place.
Here is Hamilton coach Brett Hull's explanation for Kosgei's surprising performance:
"Unfortunately, Peter woke up with the flu. He had not felt well on the trip out, but his condition worsened on Friday evening. Our campus has been battling the Swine and regular flu and he caught an unlucky break. Peter has the heart of a champion and chose to run and defend his title where many would have not run at all. I can assure you he did not give up. He stated that with about a half mile to go his legs just would not go any faster and his head was pounding. He spent the next 45 minutes in the medical tent with the doctor for he was too weak to stand. While we would have loved for him to pull it off, we are proud of his efforts and he will come back from this stronger than before."
If he was truly sick then why did he make a move so early in the race? Why not wait until later on if his legs were truly that weak?
Because he was not lucky enough to speak with you before the race. You could have helped him out a lot!
because winning any other way is chicken sh**
