And I thought Brian Sell was a Blue Collar Runner ...
*cough* 17 flat *cough*
The kid is an athlete, he plays basketball. running is used for fitness, it is not a sport...my son's team run xc too. come on, what's the big deal?
This is why single class cross-country should be the norm.
Congratulations to the kid, but it is what it is.
Alan
Doesn't even look like he tied his laces...
but it does kinda look photoshopped...
wins, what gives the idea that he won the race?

"Not a sport"...I can't stand people like you. I have a fat ass kid that I know who is 200 pounds overweight who says track/cc aren't sports, I tell him just b/c you can't do it doesn't mean it's not a sport. Open up what little brain you have and realize that runners work/train harder than any basketball player.

I didn't get the impression he was saying that XC isn't a sport, just that he kids participate for fitness and not to partake in the sporting aspect. Hence not buying proper shoes to maximize performance.
I could be wrong though and he could just be a troll.

The results that go with the picture ...
Yeah, that kid won alright I checked the results and its him. That is amazing, maybe Jordan's are a new secret to winning, maybe we should get Hall a pair since he sucks now. Kid deserves mad props.
And how many of your kids were on the podium at State?

Impressive!
I went and looked at most of the pictures. There are only three black guys in the whole race and they are all on the same team.
Having lived in SC, I can say this:
SC has one of the highest (if not THE highest) percentage of african american citizens among its popualtion of any state. Yet it is extremely divided along race lines in almost every aspect of life, including sports. XC is a "white boy" sport to many many people you will talk to who were born and raised in the state - white or black. So, it's not surprising to see only 3 black kids in a xc state meet race. Remember, the Confederated States of America battle flag still flies at the state house. It's not up on the dome anymore, but it is being carried by a giant Confederate soldier on a horse statue which is on the grounds of the state house.
Things are changing some, but at a much slower rate than most places around.
Sounds fishy.
I was at the meet and he did win running in basketball shoes. The single A meet is pretty weak. Regardless, he probably has some natural talent and I would guess that a 5K is close to the longest he has ever run.
While McKellar was able to pass Quattlebaum for second place, he was unable to get past Hampton, even though the North Central junior slowed down and extended a finger skyward in celebration about 100 yards from the finish line before realizing he was losing considerable ground and speeding back up to hold off a fast-closing McKellar.
...
But even with that past success on the course, he couldn’t overtake Hampton, a junior who finished second at last season’s state meet.
...
During Saturday’s race, McKellar was fully aware of Hampton down the back stretch of the race. Already closing the gap, McKellar was presented an even bigger opening with Hampton’s early celebration, which he said helped augment his finishing kick.
“I was hoping I’d get the first-place guy because he was showboating a little bit, but it didn’t work out quite like that,” McKellar said.
“I was like, ‘God, why is this guy celebrating? I’m right behind him. He doesn’t know it.’ And then he turned around and saw me and sped up a little bit. I guess he didn’t have as much space on me as he thought. I definitely wanted to beat him. It gave me that extra little kick that I needed.”
Yup.....an 8th grader got 3rd too.
