"There was pre-race drama ahead of tomorrow's IAAF / EDF Energy World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham, when three of the main medal contenders, Mary Keitany, Sammy Kitwara and Dathan Ritzenhein, were stuck for nearly an hour in the lift of the REP Theatre"
Poor Mary.
"Thankfully all were eventually freed but after their exhausting ordeal they returned immediately to the athletes hotel."
_________
So what was so exhausting about it? I don't think anyone was thinking, "OMG, we're all gonna die!" Probably little emotional upheaval. Just sitting for an hour and chatting with a couple other runners . . . and getting to escape the press conference in the process.

Considering they were probably overhydrating on the day before the half marathon, things may have gotten tense.
Three trapped? That would leave 99% of the elevator as empty space. Figure nobody there was much bigger than a wiffle bat.
Kitwara was probably scared and Ritz just puttin' it on. If anything, Kitwara must be thinking how cool Ritz is - race strategy people! Nike/Salazar conspiracy.
Kitawara left first. Ritz appeared 1 minute and 17 seconds later saying he was really proud about how long he'd stayed in there.
