Yes, that is what I am considering...
I signed up for the Hartford marathon and did some decent training for it. If healthy I'm pretty sure I could break 3:00. However, my leg has been hurting and I don't know if it's shin splints, a stress fracture, or what. It doesn't hurt when I'm not running but pops up every once in a while. Hurt Saturday, then I was able to run pain-free Monday and Tuesday after taking Sunday off. However, Wednesday night I stopped running at the first instance of pain, about 15 minutes in. I am terrified that the same thing will happen during the race. I am obviously staying off my feet as much as possible today and tomorrow (Friday).
I really want to qualify for Boston and this looks to be my only chance, plus I already blew $100 just to register for this race. Obviously doctor's fees would be much higher if I seriously injure myself.
Am I stupid to go for it? What is the worst that could happen if I just run on it? Stress fracture? Complete break or permanent damage? I will be really busy with work for the next couple months, so I probably won't be able to run much until after Christmas even if I'm healthy. I'm willing to injure myself if it means finishing and qualifying but could it possibly mean that I might never run again?
I bet I could fight my way through a mile or 5k but to pound away for 26 miles on a bad leg seems irrational...then again, us runners are not always the most rational beings :)
So, run/don't run? Any advice/personal experiences are totally appreciated!
