huh?? Talk about hyperbole. The article was ok. I've read 1000's better. What was so special about it? Did you mean it was the best article for the Letsrun audience ever written BY PATRICK or in USA TODAY?? If you meant that, maybe, but as far as running articles in general, it wasn't anything special.

And then of course there are the 10-15 threads every week on how Obama is a communist who has destroyed our country forever.

You really only care about number of hits to your site, and don't pretend otherwise (if you didn't care about that bottom line, and cared more about promoting running, you'd start axing all the absurd non-running threads and all the racist shit on here. But you guys always let those threads flourish because they attract lots of hits. [well of course when Bush was prez, you preferred to eliminate, most of the time, most political threads] . that's strange because i just checked the message board for the most popular threads to highlight on the front page and almost all of the most popular ones were about running. i know what you're talking about with people sometimes discussing some wild things on the boards but some of your accusations are just emotional rather than rational or based in reality.

i was actually impressed by how many people were actively talking about running related things on the site today.

and personally i think hyperbole is what story-telling (aka what normal people talk to each other about every day) and journalism (aka professional story-telling) is all about. hyperbole is also what sports and entertainment are all about, making one feel like they're watching the best or most interesting things human beings do. i, like rojo, personally am fascinated by the alan webb alberto salazar story. i don't understand why that would make someone angry.

I would like to have asked Salazar what he saw in Webb's 2007 log book that made him think that Webb can still do better?

I'm pretty sure Ritz is still 26. As I recall I believe he was born on December 31, and Webb was born the next day.

If Webb's achilles problems are lasting this long, I really think it's time for him to make the move to triathlon, as others have suggested. He was an outstanding age-group swimmer and certainly has the power/endurance to be competitive on the bike. And not too many people could live with him, on the run.

This achilles thing first showed up in his year at Michigan, no? That qualifies as a long-standing condition, I'd say. I think his best bet would be getting most of his general aerobic fitness from non-running activities, and dropping his running to 30-40mpw. He could be a killer at the Olympic-distance triathlon.

remember, he went 27'34 a year before or after

if he had combined that holy grail of 1'43/~27'30 in any given year, then the guy was capable of 3'27 & even dipping into the 3'26s !!!

hey, at least alsal seems to have webb rained in and not pushing it, which is exactly what he needs at this point in his career. two years of being banged up and overtraining in 08 and 09 means he needs to put the brakes on. i wonder what his mile pace is for these 5 mile runs? over 6:30 or under 6:30?

either way, alsal knows what kind of engine he has in his shop now, he's got a ferrari that needs that $500 an hour mechanic to get it humming again, and alsal will. webb will be under 3:46 by 2011 and back to 3:47 in 2010.

To Employee #1 - I was not aware that hyperbole is what journalism is all about. Perhaps i should walk across the street to the College of Journalism at UF and ask some of the professors if, in fact, hyperbole is what journalism is all about. Honorable journalism is about anything but hyperbole. What most of the television networks spew across the airwaves IS hyperbole. It is also NOT honorable journalism.

As to Rojo's comments - as soon as I read the post and the title of the thread, I figured he meant that the message board would explode with people jumping all over AlSal and Webb the way so many on here, do. Much like the poster above said.

As to the actual article - I would love to see Ritz go under an hour. I would love to see him get the american record. More importantly, though, I would love to see him get out there and get after the win, regardless of time. It seems he is in great shape and brimming with confidence. Can't wait.

And I would like to see Webb return to 2007 form and better. Except I'd like to see him doing it at championship meets. The guy is one of the most talented runners ever produced by the united states, and we should all be cheering him on, despite what's happened up til now.

This thread is just more evidence of the self hatred runners have for ourselves.

Here we actually have USAToday talking to one of our best coaches, about our best runners.. and what do we carp about? The website owners politics and tired messageboard threads.

I'm so excited about what's happening in the NW with our distance guys. I'm more optomistic about our runners than Ive been in a long long time. I can't wait to see the results of Ritz, Webb, Teg, and Rupp's coming of age on the pro scene.
