If you are for real, you're too dumb to realize you answered your own question. How so? Well, you say you don't want a relationship, but you're worried she's going to ask why you don't say "I love you" back. Well, that's when you reply "because we're only friends, nothing more," and your goal of no relationship/no "I love you" will be achieved. That will stop her from saying it, and you won't be anything other than friends. So you are an idiot who can't even see that the path you've chosen already is the right path.

There are different kinds of love. Romantic, friendship and family. I'm sure this is the friendship kind.

ask her bra, seriously, just be like, hey, you mean that in a friend way right? or you should ask her if she wants to be in a relationship with you to see her objectives. misleading friendships/romances that involve one person wanting friendship and the other wanting sex can destroy the people involved, including friends. just be clear with her and dont lead her on, maybe shes testing you... ive watched this same thing destroy too of my close friends in an awkward love triangle

You are describing the first girl I fell in love with. She always dated someone else. She called me her "best friend" and I did the same. Most of the time I denied that I wanted more, but then there were many times I did want more. Well as much time as we spent together we did become more...while she was dating the "others". Once I was single, and she was actually single at the same time, and we were both all over eachother all the time and it occured to me that we should be together...she said she wasn't ready for a relationship, BS stuff like that. Then one week later I show up at her house and a new guy is there and they are dating and saying I love you and crap..this is like a week later. Long story short, I was crushed and gave up on her. However she still called and we still talked, she still said "i love you" at the end of phone calls, etc. She was stringing me along. I was always the "back up". It actually took a couple years for me to realize this.

I'm happy to say I'm married to someone else...who doesn't cheat, lie, or manipulate. I don't have to worry about my wife. That is my suggestion though...find a better "friend" before it gets serious.

Girls with low self-esteem like to collect men. If they have a "best friend" who's head-over-heels for them, so much the better. The attention that you lavish on her makes her feel good about herself. If you pull away, suddenly you'll see more interest on her part. She wants to keep the carrot just out of reach.

Not to say that there aren't occasionally appropriate times for friends to say, "I love you." For example, if she's visiting from another city and you haven't seen her in a while, it would be perfectly normal to say it as you say goodbye. Every phone call though? That's a little much.

spot on! these shallow girls with low self-esteem need to use you to gain the confidence for the image boyfriend they want. when they are on top of the world they dont talk to you that much....ahhh but when bf dumped them, cheated on them, or is being an asshole, thats when you get the call.

i say call her out, ask her what she really thinks of you, and dont let her pull the "your a great guy, and one of my best friends" but if she does then ask her why she thinks she has to use you. girls like this can take the image boyfriend treating them like that, but not you. if she gets really pissed and denys using you, she is indeed using you.

Is this girl the "spiritual" type? I have a girl friend (I'm a straight girl) who always ends our telephone conversation with "love you!" She also uses words like "joy" and "light" and "eternal peace" and all that crap. I don't say "love you" back, but I do probably love her in a friendship kind of way. I don't think you need to feel obligated to reciprocate. If she ever asks you about it, just say you prefer to show your love in actions, not in words. You are a guy afterall, duh.

In this country, people say "I love you" all the time to friends, family, kids, etc. So, OP, don't read too much into it. She's just a friend, and you said it yourself, it's probably better that way.

As for me, I only say I-L-Y when I'm in love--I only said it to two people in my life, and not many times.

Look the point of the matter is, if you care for her then don't kill her with your words. Make it soft- write her a song. Amily- lil' wayne. That's romantic.
