Every year there seems to be a general consensus among American athletes that World XC starts are brutally fast. I've also heard that Pat Porter (one of the few Americans to experience success in this race) trained to be able to take off like a bat out of hell. Arkansas seems to go out towards the front of the pack at NCAA's every year. I've read they complete a 10 mile run where they start at about 4:30 and just hang on (presumably training for a fast start). Are there other ways to train for World XC starts that would better prepare US athletes?
