A student-athlete at Highlands Ranch High School collapsed and died yesterday afternoon during a school-sponsored cross country run on the Highline Canal, the school principal said in a letter to parents today.
After collapsing, sophomore Quinton Sanford was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance after someone called 911 and CPR was administered, the letter said. Sanford, whose father was present during the run, died en route to the hospital.
A cause of death was not immediately known; the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office has scheduled an autopsy this afternoon.
Sanford had competed as a member of the school's cross country team as recently as Sept. 4 at the Arapahoe Warrior Cross Country Invitational, according to race results.
School officials are offering students the opportunity to talk to teachers, mental health staff, administrators and a Douglas County School District crisis team.
"Feelings can be especially overwhelming at this time," Principal Jerry Goings wrote in the letter to parents. "There is no right way to express the sadness, grief and confusion that our students can feel when they encounter tragedy."
Sanford's siblings attend Cresthill Middle School and Eagle Ridge Elementary.

Sad news. This is the third high school runner to die this fall. The other two were from California and Wisconsin. What's happening? Is it possible that the resurgence in high school distance running in American is actually putting some kids at risk? Kids are training as hard as ever and putting in more miles than the past. Just a thought.

Sometimes there are just defects that are a ticking time bomb.
These are sad events indeed.
I would argue that the odds of dying during running are far outweighed by the potential health gains. -

Thanks for sharing the news, Donnie Downer.

Here are the results for the meet he ran, he finished the 5K in 28:46. That tells me the kid was pretty out of shape (I mean that in a respectful way, of course) and one day his body just collapsed on him during a run. Prayers go out to his family. -
you don't see kenyans dropping dead on runs
-
runners are not checked for dangerous heart problems prior to competing, so a small % are going to die.
-
some dangerous heart problems are hard to detect as well. remember ryan shay's case.
scary and tragic when this happens. i wish those that knew him all the best. -
Lets be honest the system that we use in this country for high school athletes physical's is a joke. Most schools bring in doctors who take your height, weight, look at your eyes, make you cough and send you on your way. I think that the sports physicals should entail a lot more than they do now and that doctors should be held responsible until they do.
-
Why would you hold a doctor responsible for meeting the requirements set by the high schools?
As tragic as it is when this happens you will never be able to prevent all of the deaths that occur in sports. -

david kimani of who was a kenyan running for i think south alabama, -
I'm almost positive Kimani was not running when he collapsed. It was just a freak thing. Maybe running had an impact but he did not die as a direct result of running the way I understand it.
-
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it happened inside the campus' cafeteria. Deaths suck, man.

How many Kenyan news stories do you read to be an expert on this? -
If you did that the Doctors would have to charge alot more and alot of the kids would not be able to afford it. Unfortunately these tragic things will happern no matter how many physicals the athletes take. To even suggest that the doctors do a better job and then take responseablilty is just another American try to pass the buck to someone else. No one wants to take responceablilty for anything!!

"some dangerous heart problems are hard to detect as well. remember ryan shay's case."
Shay knew he had a defect, he just felt it better to run than not.
All cases sad no matter what. -
Why do so many folks need to find "someone responsible" to blame for everything. Some things just are. If I keel over on a run and die so be it. I would rather run than not.

I recall some fellow dropping dead during the Olympic marathon trials--I guess he was out of shape as well.
