Oh, heaven forbid!!

God forbid that a movie about a runner should have anything to do with anything besides running. God forbid that a runner's life should have anything in it besides running. God forbid that a runner should care about anything besides running.

Well, when the subplots take up like 80% of the movie and the other 20% is about the actual story, watching it was a waste of time in my opinion. It was all about life in the bighouse, and racial issues, and other junk, and it was all drawn out. Snoooozzzzzeeeee

Peter Strauss of Rich Man Poor Man fame(?). That rubbish also had a young Nick Nolte in it. I agree, the movie was awful.

Very possibly the best running movie of all time. The '70s prison lingo only adds to the entertainment value.

Nick Nolte was not in The Jericho Mile. However, I believe many of the inmates were played by actual convicts.

Sympathy for the Devil.......never sounded as good as when Lickety Split goes for the gold.........great great movie!!!!!!!!

Drama(will Lickety-Split get the Furlough?)

Strong Friendsip(Styles and Lickety-Split, also the coach. The scene where he fights the Brotherhood because they accused him of setting up Styles, "HE WAS MY BROTHER, MAN!")

Plus Brian Dennehy being an evil bastard, "YOUR DEAD, I'M LOOKING AT A DEAD MAN! I'M TALKING TO A DEAD MAN!"

A good part was when the Olympic Committe came to ask Murphy if he'd kill his father if he had the chance to go back and do things all over and Murphy goes, "I'd kill the son-of a-bitch all over again."

Because above all this film was about principles and standing up and being a man.

But the best scene of course was when he threw down the solo 3:49 mile with the whole prison cheering, Sympathy for the Devil playing, and then he smashes the watch against the wall.

Very fine movie.

Peter Strauss actually worked out with UCLA coach Jim Bush to prepare for the film. Runner's World that he got into the mid 4:30s for the mile.

The runners Strauss races against were locals. One was a guy named Bob Deis, he ran 4:06 for the mile at American River College and about 4:03 at Fresno State. Another was Rick Denisik who ran 4:06 in the mile for Sac. State and another was Adam Ferriea a sub-2:20 marathoner.

The race scenes were filmed in 110 yard segments. The track was built by the prisoners and many were in the film. I thought it was pretty good in showing how a man dealt with his crime and captivity. My favorite line was when Strauss confronted the head of the ameteur athletic federation at his hearing when he said, "you decidied before you had your breakfast that I wasn't going to run in your race." Or something like that.

It's called Slapshot starring Paul Newman. It's a very underappreciated classic.

Yeah, all that was good but they left out the escape part were they fired the automatic weapons and there were many explosions and they didn't even show the best high school or college runner of the time.

No, that's not what I said. I was trying to explain that Nolte was in Rich Man Poor Man.
