josh is the american record holder in the 50k. he is legendary.

The pheromones he secretes effect people miles away… in a slight, but measurable way.

Josh is in the mammoth lakes track club and trains with Meb, Ryan, and Deena. He ran 2:14 back in the day. He is sponsored by Powerbar and is currently training for the Comrades Race which I believe is 54.4 miles (twice the marathon distance). He ran 1:05:10 for the philly half marathon this weekend as a workout and had put in around close to 150 miles that week. He has a twitter account and listed his mileage for the past three weeks and said he was very pleased with the tempo run. He also somethwhat periodically lists his daily training such as workouts and 27m for the day on two runs I don't quite understand why he isn't running more "conventional" distances since he seems immensely talented and tough as nails. He is probably a 2:10 marathoner right now.

He has spent his entire career as Clint Verran's bitch. They were the 2 youngest marathoners in the Trials back in 2000 in Pittsburgh. CLINT BEAT HIM BY 5 MINUTES. Then in 2004 some people hyped Josh as a potential guy to make the team CLINT BEAT HIM BY 3 MINUTES. Then in 2007 both Josh and Clint were the only 2 guys to have been in 200-2004 and 2007 Trials. Clint finished in 17th and Josh DNF'D.

Josh is the typical guy that does non traditional things in an ttempt not to expose his real talent level. He had the treadmill marathon record but was beaten by Michael Wardian. So he went on to the 50k record because it is obscure enough that no one else cares. As soon as any trials level guy wants to beat it, they will.

Josh will NEVER break 2:15 again, but he has found a way to have people that don't know any better think that he is capable of a 2:10.

We can't forget that he was on the TV show The Bachelorette and is very metro.

Overall though, he seems like a solid guy who has never tried to be in the running spotlight so to say. He runs hard and doesn't gloat it.

But I do agree... why does he not run conventional distances? Is he really just weak sauce?

He's actually sponsored by Newton right now, but you may know him for being on The Bachelorette. He's very religous, big promoter of the sport and himself, and is a real hard worker. Good guy.

I agree with the criticism of him and did not know about the Verran connection. Clinthas his own physical therapy business in Rochestor and is doing very well. He still runs occasionally with the team and is a nice guy. I don't know Josh but perhaps he is dodging competition but has also found a niche and way to make a living working out, which is unassailably cool. Part of me likes hearing he gets put in his place but I admire him the way thieves admire each other

I heard him speak at the Boston Expo. Dude is annoying. And likes the sound of his own voice. But he loves to run A LOT so he's one of us.

josh cox is one of those guys who is passionate about running and he will be both praised for it & criticized. he's like a celebrity in our sport. he's kinda like lance armstrong. there are lots of critics of him. it's just the nature of being at the top of the game & also being in the public eye. i'm sure he doesnt care what the critics say...if he can inspire someone than it is all worth it. it really speaks volumes to his humanitarian side i think.

he has that sweet 32 mile or so tempo on youtube.. cool tattoos too.

Bottom line:

1) Lots of people hate him because he is an excellent self-promoter. Some people hate that kind of thing, but it allows him to make a living out of the sport.

2) Lots of people like him because he is a genuine guy who always has time for other people, especially his friends. He is genuinely one of the good guys - you won't catch him speaking badly of others or crap like that.

That's why on a thread like this you get people ready to chew him up and spit him out, but also people who passionately defend him.

So decide which is more important - 1 or 2. Because at the end of the day, both are accurate, and relatively neutral, descriptions of him.

No, I hate to pick on the guy. He took some serious time off to care for his dad who was dying of cancer, and anyone who can do that has earned my respect.

Josh Cox goes to Mooresville high school in north carolina. He is a good runner.
