Neither Shorter nor Manzano were born in the U.S, but both were raised in America and did all of their running here (unlike Lagat). Despite this, some say that Manzano is Mexican, while nobody would claim that Shorter is German and not American.
I'm not a big fan of Manzano, but why do some of you think he isn't an American? Is it because he isn't white?
And if that's the case, would you consider German Fernandez to be an American?
ask yourself this question? If you had a son who is married and he joined the American Army and was send overseas to fight the war and his wife was allowed to go. While station there she had baby wouldn't that baby still be American?

He is a US citizen that competes for the US. He is American.
how could you not be a fan of manzano, he's a talented runner who worked his way up the international scene. isn't that the american dream... pulling oneself up by the bootstraps? those of you who watch flotrack can attest that he is also an extremely nice guy. what's not to like? the color of his skin?

exactly. what's interesting to me is how there is never an uproar of sanya richards competing for america. she came to america when she was in her teens got citizenship and has competed for the US since then. im not sure when leo moved to texas but im assuming it was as a child seeing that he doesn't have an extremely thick accent that is noticeable of those who migrate at a later age.
Because Sanya Richards actually wins unlike Manzano. Win = good.
but in terms of citizenship and representing their countries to their fullest abilities there isn't a difference between the two. hell they both went to the same university (im not sure if sanya had already gone pro by the time leo arrived).

As far as I can tell everyone (aside from a miniscule number of outliers - and there will always be these sorts out there) considers both Shorter and Manzano to be Americans. And both of these runners have given true American running fans nothing but positives to be proud of.

Manazano has Mexican heritage that he should be proud of. He is also an American citizen, of which he should be proud of.
I don't think anyone doesn't consider Manzano American. Maybe someone somewhere does, but I don't think I've ever heard this come up.
