Powerade contains high fructose syrup, and fructose is not easy on the stomach WHILE running, akin to eating an apple. A 4.5% glucose solution, with some flavor, should work just fine. 400ml should absorb in about 15 min., the flavor and the glucose just make it more appealing to drink, helping the runner to get the entire dose down - crucial early in a marathon and in a hot race like Berlin.
I think J.T. Daniels would back me up on this one.
I'm sure she reads letsrun forums on a daily basis and will keep your advice in mind for her next marathon in 20 months.

I was a little surprised by the Powerade thing too, but figured if she's accustomed to drinking it during training runs, it's best to stick with what your body is accustomed to.

This is what happens when your clean. If she was doping she would of won a few big races by now.
OR she could have drunk Gatorade Endurance formula. It has no high fructose corn syrup. While it is not ALL glucose, It is sucrose and glucose (dextrose).

I guess IMO is incorrect, MSO 'my strong opinion' would be more acurate. I was very surprised to check the indgredients of Powerade and see the fructose, I figured Alberto would of known better. Not sure if they tried it out during training runs or not, I hope so, otherwise all that training and effort and they may have just missed one small detail.
the sugar in powerade is high fructose corn syrup. you can google it and it's utilization for energy. In fact some researchers think it cannot be used for energy utilization in any significant quantity. not sure why they would choose a high fructose corn syrup drink as their drink of choice for a marathon.

No matter what you say, the guy is right. Fructose is NOT a good ingredient in a sports drink.
It's also possible they're using a version of Powerade that doesn't have HFCS, i.e. from another country or the powder form.
However, that seems unlikely. It's odd to me that with all of the sports drinks and mixes, etc, that are available they would settle for something like a mainstream commercial product like Powerade.
I also thought it was interesting that they mixed in half a gel with the Powerade...never thought of that. Anyone else ever try this?
