My son ran cyo cross country last fall and ran in a pair of asics training shoes. He raced in womens x/c Jana. This is the womens version of the old mens nike waffle racer.he runs two to three times a week about 25 minutes each run. and during the season they ran five one mile x/c races.
He has a natural forefoot -midsole foot strike and i would like to see him maintain this. Thus I have let him train in his waffle racers this winter, trying to keep him on dirt as much as possible. However with rain this is not always possible, so he will be running on asphalt 50% of the time. After running for years in Asics kayanos myself and being a very pronounced heel striker , I picked up a pair of waffle racers to experiment if I could change my footstrike and noticed how they put me up on my forefoot midsole instantly. With little padding in the heel you dont even want come down on the heel.I can already tell how this is strengthening my ankles and foot muscles. I have not experienced sorenss in my calves as many people post.My son has not complained of any soreness either.
However after going to a very knowledgable running store
the employees cringed when I told them I was running him in the womens waffle Janas.they recomended a lighter weight asics trainer. What do you guys suggest? Keep in mind there are not near the availability in womens racers as in mens should you have a suggestion of another racing flat.
Should I keep him in the waffles and maybe add a cushioned insert for a little extra protection since he will be on asphalt occasionaly or let him run as he has been the last 2 months. Or should I buy the light trainers and let him run in it on the roads and have him run in the waffles only on dirt or track workouts?
