That was great. Guys like Dixon and Pre and Walker are what made that the Golden Age of running. They had personalities and people loved them.
I remember well, hammering workouts and having a few beers with my friends.
I like the story of the 2 hour run inthe midday heat where they ganged up on Pre.
bump
Thanks for this, it was a good listen, and I think it can show some of the young Pre detractors why he was so well respected by his peers.
Liked the quote where Dixon witness Pre runnin a 4:01 mile in practice, have a ten minute recovery, and run a 3:58 mile.
And that he believed Pre was going to get it right in Montreal.
This is where someone should point out that in a sport of very very good guys, Dixon is as good a guy as there is. So I'll point it out.
cool. tx
Good point. It's hard to understand the Pre haters on this message board. I have a friend who simply doesn't like anything that's popular.
If people like a good movie- decent, fun, date movie- he'll start talking about how the director could have done a better job, the acting, etc.
Some people just want to seem "above" others. I guess it's low self esteem.
I grew up, running, in the Pre, Dixon, Walker, Bedford era. They were cool, they were fun, and they worked hard and were world class athletes.
watch the Dixon-Cam

I think you summed up the Pre bashing on this board pretty well, although I think it's also partly an overreaction against the idea of Pre as THE hero of American distance running. And all the speculation about how he died is just people being assholes.
Rod was playing nice about Pre in '76. The world had improved and Pre had plateaued.
How do you know? No one knows if he would have won or not. Plus, only on letsrun is someone a total failure when they don't win an olympic medal. Ans, of course they're being judged by people who've won gold.
