OK, sure any elite athlete is likely to be very lean - especially compared to the population as a whole. But I have noticed that many swimmers, even top elites, are not crazy lean like so many runners. Why is this?
Is it a matter of it not being necessary? Being light is needed in an impact sport like distance running, but maybe it's not in swimming? Or is it an advantage to have more bouyancy from the little bit of extra fat? Or is it a consequence of training in a relatively colder environment (the water of a pool vs. the heat of the track, trail, road, etc) that results in the body just storing a little bit more? I'd be interested in hearing some others' thoughts.
