If you've watched the finish of any tris you know what I'm talking about.

They stopped short?! That's my move!
The same reason girls 4x400 relays don't know how to take a handoff
You just swam over 2 miles in choppy water, biked 112 miles in the heat, and then ran 26.2 miles. What is the difference of 4 seconds? Let them enjoy it.
YOU TELL EM ROMBUS!

They can't enjoy it after they cross the tape?
That is the Ironman triathletes, yes. But the OP didn't specify. Plenty of shorter tri's out there to talk about. I don't know whether or not they walk across the line though as I have never watched the finish of one...
I just saw the end of a tri on universalsports. The guy walked across the line of a tri that had a 10k run at the end.
Ha haaa! Personal best!!
I searched this in youtube to find out what you were talking about. This is the first thing I clicked on:
Isn't it obvious? Their events are not about time, so they are enjoying every second that they can. They usually have a somewhat large lead, so they can get away with this. Road racing and track is too competitive with close finishes to allow this, not to mention everyone is wrapped about times instead of head to head matchups.
Sometimes they don't even walk ... one memorable Ironman a woman painfully crawled across finish line - it took forver but probably the most dramatic finish ever in it
I'm usually talking about the guy that wins. He running and then look sback at his lead and then starts to walk.
Best ever finish at Ironman

That is famous because she had the lead all throughout, until the last 200 meters. she collapsed and crawled, only to see the 2nd place girl pass her with about 50 yds to go.
There is some nice occurances. One time a guy in the lead collapsed with about 100 yds to go, and the second place guy helped him, and they finished together. Nice.

It's spelled "rhombus".
Romulus actually
Because they are such tools.
For those who walk/jog across the line while winning or handily beating anyone they were competing against....it give the crowd some time to cheer for them, and more importantly, it give the photographers and video-tographers more time to get some great shots, and catch the names of the sponsors that are splashed all over their uniforms. Which in turn, makes more companies want to sponsor triathlons and triathletes... Just good business, basically, and very smart marketing...
